    .270 or 6.8 SPC

I have a AR-15 in .223. I am looking for something to hunt deer with. I like the AR platform. Should I save a little more and get a 6.8 or get a .270? All I would need for the 6.8 is the upper and mags.

Well you could get the DPMS .308 then you could get an .243 upper too.

The 6.8 is ok, but isn't what I would call a good long range deer gun.

The .270 is hands down the better deer and big game caliber!

Unless you are just hung up on the AR type rifles, I'd go with a bolt .270

i agree...keep the 6.8 to 200yds for deer as you are shooting +/-85gr-115gr vs the 130gr-150gr. Barnes is making some good solids pills for this round but a bolt action 270 with mucho mas powder is a better killer for whitetail.

          What these guys said.

I've shot one deer with my 6.8 at 80 yds and she dropped right there. Broke both shoulders. Inside 200 yds the 6.8 is quite good.

Beyond that you should look at a bigger caliber.

I load 110 gr Sierra Pro Hunters in my 6.8 at about 2600 fps. I'm confident it will cleanly kill a whitetail to 200 yds. That's a fairly warm 6.8 load.

My "light" .270 load is a 130 gr Hornady Soft Point at 2800 fps. I could easily load it to 3000 fps if needed.

The .270 will reach out a lot further than a 6.8.

Two great rounds that do their intended jobs well.

Can't add any more then whats already posted above. If you just have to have the AR platform the 6.8 will do good out to 200. A bolt gun in 270 is capable of killing critters at a greater range then the 6.8. But why not just invest in an AR 10 and you would still have the range of the bolt 270 in an AR platform.

Get a bolt .270 and shoot the barnes vortex 130 grain bullets. Best factory load I've shot. Expensive yes, but worth it for a deer any day!
