I am looking to buy an AR-15 (yes, I know it is a useless gun, but they are cool). What are your suggestions? I have seen that some brands carry a .308 caliber. Is it possible to hunt with that? Can you hunt effectively with the .223?

Before I took up the bow, I hunted with my AR in .223 for 5 years. It's taken a bunch of whitetail, and it's always been a clean kill. The key is shot placement and bullet selection. I shot 60gr Nosler Partitions. I've seen the destruction it will do when cleaning my deer. If shot placement is a worry, you shouldn't be shooting at a deer with any caliber. Making up for being a poor shot with a large caliber rather than practice is a poor decision. It's just like hunting with a bow. I also won't take shots over 200 yards with it, but the longest shot I've actually taken was about 160 yards.
I've also killed pigs, bobcat, and yotes with it with great success.
I have no experience with the .308 models so I can't say anything positive or negative about them. I like my .223. It's cheaper to shoot and took care of any hunting I did. Also serves as my home defense weapon.

i love my Bushmaster AR-15, it is 5.56/.223 chambered, but i mainly bought if for just shooting enjoyment. I have no doubt that it will kill any varmit, hogs, etc., but i hesitate to shoot it at deer unless i am going for a neck shot. I just dont like the .223 for deer. It has been done and many people have done it, i just prefer a larger caliber for deer. But it is an absolute blast to shoot. As far as other calibers, there are numerous ones out there, just do a little research, i am just not as familiar with the different cailber options as some people on here.
