    AR build up questions

If a guy wanted to do a AR build what would be the cheapest route to go parts wise? I know many will say go with the top of the line -- well that won't be possible and even then this will have to be a 1-2 year project to get it done most likely. I know there are plenty of AR websites to go to but I wanted to seek advise here first. I'm primarily wanting something that will be functional and safe. I'm not looking for a tricked out AR right now just to build a decent base model for future home and personal protection. Any input appreciated.

I bought a Rock River stripped lower locally for $99 since there didn't seem to be much saving by buying on the internet and it saved the $25 or so FFL fee you pay when you buy it off of the net.

After that I just watched gunbroker.com for deals and bought mostly Rock River and DPMS parts. I ended up around $600 total and enjoyed the buying and building process. I haven't had a single problem with the AR I built.

Midway has the lower end DPMS just missing a stripped lower for $450ish I think. You can find stripped lowers for $100 or less if you look. There was a group buy on stripped lowers on another local forum for $48 each recently. That would put you in business for a little over $500.

Do some looking around locally or at a gun show for a lower receiver. Go with whatever brand is within your budget. You may want to try and find a fully rigged out lower. If you have done some minor gunsmithing before then you can get a stripped lower and get a parts kit to finish it out. The DPMS kits are pretty cheap, some people prefer the Rock River Arms. Do some checking online for parts kits. You can look at rock river, dpms, midwayusa, or cheaper than dirt. Decide what kind of stock you want and make sure you get the right buffer tube if you are going to use an adjustable CAR stock. Check online or at gunshows for whatever kind of upper receiver you are looking for. I would suggest trying to get one with a chrome lined chamber if you can unless you are going with a stainless barrell. Keep in mind you can get a base model upper receiver and always upgrade to a quad rail later if you want to.

Group buy lower for $48 and a Blackthorne kit for $400. Nice AR for under $500. It will work like a $1000 one.

Check out Plum Crazy Firearms. They make polymer lowers for the ar( same stuff as Glock frames). A complete lower from them is $120. I have a LEO buddy that loves his. Then you can watch Texas Gun Trader or gunbroker for uppers. Or check out Model 1 Sales.
