I am ready to run a water line to our new homesite from our well. My question is what kind of pipe can I use in a clay soil? I have been told that the expansion/contraction of the clay soil will break normal PCV water pipes. Don't know if that's true but I only want to do this one time! Suggestions would be appreciated!

Sch. 40 PVC
Only way to go in any soil.
Don't use the stuff in rolls regardless of what type of piping it is.
We normally use the yellow poly pipe for gas lines under ground but adapting the ends for water is tricky.
Like was said above sch 40 fittings are easier to find at most home centers if you ever need to make a repair or another tie-in to the line in the future.

Black gumbo here and it moves a lot! Before PEX I was fixing the old sch40 pvc 1-2 a year. Hadn't had a break since PEX was installed- 2 yrs ago. I don't know exactly what kind my plumber used. It was yellow and in a roll..? Had over 300 foot installed from the meter at the road to the house, shop and barn.

if you are really worried about breakage, you can run you sch 40 inside 3" corragated drainage pipe. It makes repairs a pain but in highly varialbe soil conditions it can help. I have never done it pesonally but i have read about farmers in nebraska and kansas doing it on a larger scale for irrigation systems. just a thought. good luck.
