How long will it keep ? Corn that is

    Any Farmers out there ?

I'm wanting to know how long corn would last, (kept dry and in barrels, say in a coverred barn) ? I know they keep seed corn and store it till next season, but what about the "quote unQuote" Cleaned corn you buy in bulk or by the bag. Will it last 8 - 10 months without disentigratting ? and I know as long as the bugs/weavels don't get it.

I'm thinking about bulk buying it now and storing it. We feed year round, but it's going to be a minimal number of feeders this year.
I refuse to pay for 10 dollar bags of corn.

    So what's your thoughts ?

I have been considering skipping corn at least during the off season this year. Gonna discuss this with lease members this weekend. Price is just getting stupid.

What does "Suspend" do to animals when they eat it?

Yea, my BIL talked about placing them on pallets and spraying ant poison on the ground and base of barrels, but still lost some to weavels. Don't know if they were already in the corn or if the poison didn't work.

              Very interesting

Decided to do some searches and found this off ask.com

According to the United States Department of Homeland Security, dried corn can be stored indefinitely, provided that it is properly stored in the appropriate containers and isn't contaminated by insects, moisture or other environmental contaminants.

I'm going to drastically cut back my feeder times to about a second a day; once in the morning and once at night.

I thought it was high this year but overbought. I've got around 20,000 pounds in a bulk bin. Whats the best stuff to treat it with?

When I was little my grandfather farmed corn. They would pick it and the haul it to the corn crib in trailers. We would auger it into the corn crib. We would spray the corn with malathon as it went into the auger. We would feed it through out the year. Never had a problem with insects. Now this was over 25 years ago.

Im not feeding during the off season, deer have lived without feeders since way before I was here and every september when I start it throwing the deer are there in numbers within a week. Protein is one thing but during spring they have plenty of high protein greens to eat, why feed corn?

We are filling them up this weekend and trickling them just to keep the hen turkeys in the area through April ....then my buddy and I will be turning them off until late July early August. We haven't been seeing any more deer than the guys that fill them up in August and at these prices we are going to cut back on the corn.

If your buying bulk from a feed mill you've already paid for storage when you paid for it. Just purchaase what you need to last until August and have them bag what you want (you will pay for bagging) on that trip. Price will drop again in August. My guess the price will drop in the next couple of months, winter will be over and ranchers will not be feeding as much, farmers who have bins and can hold corn until Jan. Feb. when the price peaks are unloading now.
