There are several that have lived through the hard times in the past and if we listen to them we have what we need. My folks lived on beans and corn bread when time were rough. (every night)
There are a lot of things one can do without. You find out what they are when you become unemployed and have to trim to stay afloat. By afloat I am not talking about running a credit card up to pay off when you get a job, I am talking about your unemployment income being enough to pay your bills and buy food.
There are some folks on here that have done that very thing.

This is a good thread, we are actually studying this in high school economics right now. A lot of what I want to say has been stated by multiple people already. There are 3 basic needs for survival (human life) Food(includes h2o), Clothing, Shelter. There are people today in this world that are lucky to find these 3 basic needs, but they do, maybe not to our STANDARDS in America. Now talking about standards, this is where we get into neccessaties in our society.. As stated I think the Internet can be given up at home, Schools, Libraries and a ton of rural communities do a city wide WI-FI for free, so students have access to complete work at home( but think about this parents, how much time do the kids really waste in school instead of completing their homework when they have time in school)? As for cell phones, I believe we are getting to the point in America that they are a need for people that live & work in a professional world(ie business, school, medical) I believe that rural workers and people that still live off the land can get by for now without a cell phone. 20 years ago cell phones & the internet were basically unheard of being owned by middle class Americans and we did just fine on getting along, but big business, greediness and new technology age has almost made these two luxuries a necessity for the American people .. just my .02

I've been "Cell Free" for going on 4 years now. It's not much different than before I got one. I do have a land-line (tone dial only option) and dial-up ISP. Got to have those so I can get on TBH. Other than that, I don't generally buy beef at the grocery store. Nothing against beef, I love it seared well. I do sometimes buy it when going out to eat, or at someone's home for dinner. Most of my red meat at home comes from wild game otherwise. And I do eat a lot of chicken and turkey from the store. Veggies are from the store too. My dogs dig my gardens up. I do live 4 miles from work and have been known to ride a bike to work from time to time. Although I do have lights, And having been hit twice in my lifetime, I don't like the traffic at 6AM. And sometimes ride it when hunting Public Land, where I get most of my red meat and/or hog meat
. Learned a thing or two from my bachelor grandfather about how to save a buck or two at home on Nat gas and electric. Ya, I know I could do with out more. Already been there.
