    The Amazing Vizsla Breed...

So this year towards the end of the season I decide I wanted to train my Vizsla to blood trail, but just never was able to get her on a trail. On the last day of the season I decided to take a buck with my gun and I kept the front legs and some blood and then threw it in the freezer. I havent pulled it out yet but I will once it warms up a bit...

    Flash forward to today

After working from home all day, we decided to take a short break and take the dog out in the snow. Anna put on the dogs sweater (they do get cold hah!) and we went to the field behind our subdivision right off 121 in Coppell. She ran around for a bit like normal but found something fun to sniff. She went from being stupid running around in the snow to following a scent trail pretty hard. In the middle of the field she stopped dead, sniffed the wind and trailed straight upwind 20 yards to a small patch of tall grass and she locked onto a spot. Curious, I walked up with her and found 4-5 drops of blood and a small little bit pooled on a leaf. I was amazed! Amazed of finding blood in a field in the middle of a city, and amazed she smelled it out and found it in 15 MPH cold with no training. I can only guess, but I would assume either a hawk or a coyote or something caught a rodent or rabbit there.

Picture of her behind the house in her sweater...

She turned one today and I was so proud of her for finding that blood. Can't wait to start actually training her for it. At first I was more curious about training her to blood trail, but no I'm flat out excited. She was loving every minute of it too.

          THAT is very cool!!

I have only trained labs (retreivers) and know nothing for trailing or even pointers for that matter.

Narco loves to fetch and has a good noggin...his nose seems to be his best asset but not sure where/how to start training for trailing.

He loves gun fire and will mix it up with my female lab on the quail & find them but will not pick them up yet, so we will be going through the force fetch pretty soon. I'm certain I can get him to retrieve...but trailing

Where do i start or what books can anyone recommend for trailing??

The ding-dong in question...we are only at 7mos.

I've found mine's nose to be it's best asset and distraction. It's tough getting her to focus when that snoz goes into gear!

            Keep us posted, Kevin.

I have hunted with one and she was great at retrieving if she could stay focused. But every Viszla and Weim I have known have had enough energy for all the dogs in the county. Does she yours have separation anxiety?

As far as I can tell they are really good hunters if you have enough time to work them. THey need their exercise...and their owner. No hunter equals destroyed house or yard. Cool story. I hope she turns out to be a good deer dog for you.

Versatile breed to say the least. Good job training your pup and she sure is purty.

                  beautiful dog K

one of the most over-looked and under-rated breeds

unless you have a Vizsla, or know someone who does..... the avg. guy doesn't have a clue about them

i'm still amazed that some people have never even heard of them

Thanks guys! She's for sure a handful at times but worth it. I am also looking for a good tracking book so if I find something I'll post it up.

Casey, she has the focus, but right now its whatever SHE wants to be focused on.

She does have a lot of energy but now that she is at the year mark its not as crazy as it was. She still gets super excited around new people but after about 10 minutes she calms down a LOT. If I had a big yard she would be fine all day. We leave her in the house all the time without too much issue. She will get into stuff on occasion but is usually pretty good. She WILL shed plants and trees outside but she just loves doing that, doesnt matter if she is alone or not. With that said, during the work week I will take her to a dog day care to keep her energy worn off (plus we are trying to sell our house). I know it sounds silly but its worth every penny.

With regards to separation anxiety, she just needs her humans. She prefers Anna or I but if someone is nice to her she is happy. She is clingy at the house and will follow Anna around EVERYWHERE. Shes been working from home the last few days from the weather and the dog is sleeping in her lap 70% of the day.

She is incredibly smart and will learn tricks in a day so you have to be careful what you teach her. I made the mistake of teaching her "speak" for a treat and it took a while for her to realize that she speaks only when I ask

Pretty cool story, Good luck with your dog. If she can even find one deer for you she will be worth her weight in gold.

Always trained mine to be a bird dog but found a deer for a kid on the grassland when the dog was 3 yrs old. Put him on the trail in the middle of the grasslands and had the deer found within 100 yards in some UGLY cover.

They are the best breed in my opinion hardcore sportsman or not. Mine is 10 now and still hunts like a champ. They are to smart for thier own good however, and will let you know when they are not happy with being left out or at home. Every hunt we went on dove, quail, pheasant he was able to adapt with some work a few weeks before hand. Wont ever own another breed. Dont ever want to think about when he goes, but when he does I might just want to lie down next to him. Good luck and enjoy your time with a wonderful breed. Youll see if you already havent.
