There is a guy down here named Leo Casas that has a 3 month bull lease program. He will consult with you on what you need/want, you pick the bull you want from his pens, he dilivers him and picks him 3 months later.

Best idea, Leo is good and has good stock and does not bring out junk, they are in good shape and tested give him a call, great advice

      Angus

low birth weights= less claving problems= less calve loss, lower vet bills, more sleep

More money per pound. If you selling at weaning(400 lbs) growth rates won't affect you as bad as people who are keeping them until they hit 800lbs.

leaseing a bull would be a great Idea for guys w/ small herds.

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the info. I think I am going to see if I can find a guy local that will lease me a trich tested Brangus or Charlois for the 11 head I have now. When my straight Angus heifers are ready to breed I will buy a quality LBW Angus bull.

Something to keep in mind is that with grain prices feeders are bringing less than fattys right now. The yards are wanting calves that can go to slaughter quicker and require less feed and inputs.

            Educate me please.

Why do cattle with big ears sell for less?

            Ears can't weigh that much???

            Interesting thread.

definitely a no go on the charolais. angus is a good choice as would be a longhorn bull. the offspring would be narrow-shouldered and cross bred.

wouldnt use herefords.. they have more problems than most, what ever you choose make sure it throws small calves for first time mothers...

Jeff, Since your cattle are heavily influenced to Angus I would direct you toward a Red or Black Limousin bull. Will make your calves 3-way cross, most hybrid vigor, they just grow off better. than straight bred cattle. I am just not a huge fan of Charolais cattle. Tent to get waay too big, more cost in daily maintenance... feed! Bulls can get into the 1800 to 2500 lb range,,,can and will break down cows when they breed them., calf's tend to be larger more time than not, even on more established cows where calving should not be a problem. Just My Opinion you Charolais breeders!
A Longhorn bull might be just the ticket, small jackrabbit calves, grow off like crazy. Range bull don't tent to get so large so breaking down cows is less of a problem.
The Rawbone cattle type just tend to be easier keepers , calfers just all the way around. More so than the flesh cattle that look good when driving down then road or through the pasture. I will take those plainer rawbone cattle every time, I guess one tends to go back to their raising as a young person in the cattle industry. Hope this helps.
                    Later,
                    John A.

It is just about the buying trends at the auctions. You used to see a lot of big earred cattle sell good at the sales but that is a thing of the past. Around abilene the black and black baldies always bring the most money hands down

Never ceases to amaze me how technical this is. My cattle knowledge was always limited to boy cows and girl cows and my never ending battle to keep them from sleeping under my feeder!

Typically speaking cattle with a lot of ear are Brahma or Brahma cross cattle. They do well on very little and are very popular in the scrub brush in south Texas and other drier parts of the country. They are slow to fatten to prime cuts on feed and most feedlots will argue that it takes more feed per pound of gain. Conversion rates, cost of gain, and average daily gain are the most important factors to feedlots. Hope that helps

I know a guy in Troup, Tx that has great Brangus bulls and will send pics of what he has if you are interested. Reasonably priced.

                                All 4-6yo

                                1- Black baldy
                                1- Red Angus
                                3- Brangus
                                6- Angus

Been looking at Angus, Brangus and Herford bulls.

This summer I will pick up 25 full angus calves. I will probably keep 10-12 of those as replacement heifers. If I could keep my bull to breed these Angus heifers that would be ideal.

Also, if any of yall have something that might be a good fit for me let me know. I would just as soon do business with a TBH'er.

If you put a bull with cows... you will end up with pregnant cows and eventually more cattle. I don't think this is a good idea. Cattle are evil. Why would you want to bring more evil into the world?
