I had the chance to go on an MLD doe hunt this past weekend in South Texas near Pearsall with Bobby Merchant. The first evening hunt I shot a 70 pound hog right before dark. There was not a good blood trail and it was pretty thick brush. Bobby brought his dog, Darla over and in ten minutes we had the hog. Score one for the dog.
The next morning I shot a doe. This time there was not more than a few drops of blood at the sight. (I love G5 Montec's but they are tough on blood trails, especially out of a pop-up.) Bobby put Darla on the trail and she jumped the doe in less than two minutes. She ran her about 100 yards until she went down. Darla stayed right on the deer until we got to her. Score another one for the dog.
The second evening I shot another doe. This time there was absolutely no blood at all. I heard the deer go down and was able to track her myself but Bobby brought in Darla for a little practice. It took her less than a minute to find the doe. Another one for the dog.
Our last morning a young man on the lease shot a doe than ran straight into a deep thicket of brush. They were unsure of the shot placement so they called Bobby to bring the dog over. Darla got one good scent and was in the thicket. Two minutes later we found the doe.
This was my first experience with a tracking dog a I was amazed. What a difference it makes to have a good dog on the trail. I would highly recommend Bobby and Darla if you find yourself in need a good tracking dog.
