Need help on crate training a puppy

I am getting a new puppy on Saturday and it has been about 15 years since I have had one. I don't believe back then I had ever heard of crate training, but I have seen it mentioned on here a lot. Until she gets old enough to stay outside I will have her in the house and will be house training her. Do you train your pup to stay in the crate at night only to sleep and do you have anything in with them, like water, or just teach her to stay in by herself. I wouldn't worry about this too much except over the past few years my beloved has managed to fill the house up with cats and I figured for the sake of being able to sleep at night I had better find out more about this crate training thing. Thanks.

Don't put water in the crate. A pad/blanket and maybe a toy or two. You can use an old fashion wind up clock that ticks for the first few days if he crys at night. Use a command like "kennel" when you put him in there. It will become his den! Take him straight to use the yard to potty when you let him out. Good luck.

Also, if its going to be a big dog when grown and you get a big crate, you might try to section it off somehow. If its too big, they will potty in the crate.

And remember the crate is your dogs safe zone, dont use it as a jail for bad behavior and dont scold them while in the crate, mine would race you to her crate after eating one my hats cause she knew once she made it there she was home free.

because they will urinate on the towel or blanket which is not what you want them doing in crate

Crate trainning is the way to go. I have a four month old Blue Heeler that I had since he was four weeks old and he is already house broke, and like it was said before the dog will think of the crate as its den or safe zone. Good luck.

                    What he said.

I only keep my dog in a crate: at night, in the bed of my truck, or if we are at a location where the dog cant run around (somewhere with leash restrictions) or if there are other dogs. But i've never used it for "detention." and I dont even have to say kennel anymore. I just open the door and he walks in.
