    Invisible fence for dogs

Does anyone have any experience with the invisible fence for dogs, underground or wireless. I am going to pull the trigger on one, but wanted to hear the does and dont's on the systems. We are going to be using it on roughly an acre around the house to hold in two lab's. Also is there a specific brand to buy and where to purchase them. Thanks..

I use to work on my uncles property where he had an underground fence on about 6.5 acres for his dogs. It doesnt take long for them to get use to their boundaries. Bad thing is hard to find when and where breaks in the line where. He has had it for ever it seems with not many problems with it. I dont know the brand or much info about it.

we had one and it worked good, your yard has to have the right shape to work at its best

we did have to upgrade to the collar for "stubborn" dogs to get our lab's attention

My grandparents had an underground one around their yard. They had this massive dog called Gator and the first time he crossed it he kinda stepped backed like, did I just feel that? Then he just walked on through after that! Didn't even faze him. Worked on the smaller dogs though...We use an above ground one at my dad's. It's stretched around almost 2 acres. Originally it was a dog one but evertime a blade of grass or limb touched it, it would groudn out and stop working. So we hooked up one rated for cattle! 4ft copperhead touched it last summer and died. When you pull the chainlink gate to within about 3-4in of the wire, a blue arch jumps across between the gate and the wire....Basically, don't get one rated for 1 acre cause it probably won't have enough punch to do what you want....oh yea, and the dogs stay in the yard now too. Won't go within 3ft of the fence

My neighbor has one and it works great! Especially if it will keep his hyperexcited lab in the yard..Only thing is he doesnt have any signs posted and when the neighbors walk down the street they are scared to death that his dog is running free and out to get them! I have to hollor out to them that there is an underground fence so they can calm down..Funny as heck to watch tho!

I have the one with a central unit and adjustable radius perimeter for our Vizsla. Before trying it, I didn't have much hope in it working as she was high strung and easily distracted...... but, after 4 years I'm a big believer.

            I followed the setup/training instructions to a 'T' and we've never had a problem.

LOL... we have this happen all the time too. It is funny...... most of the time. A sign is a good idea.

I was thinking about running it above ground all the way, on the same post as the barbed wire, and then where my entry way gate and my back gate are go under ground with it there. Reason being is i'm afraid of gophers tearing it up underground, then having to dig all that crap up to find a break. Not shure yet, anyone play with the wireless set up yet?

Dogtra is the best. Innotek is the best for the money. Either way you go, get a surge protector for it. Both os those companies have excellent customer service.

The wireless are ok but you are limited with them. The ones I have, have a 30, 60 and 90ft radius around the wireless unit.

We've got two drive through gates and we kept it above ground. We put some 1/4 in PVC in the ground on each side of the gate and wrapped the wire around it before crossing the gap. Then we cut the wire a couple inches from the PVC and put a spring in and tied the two wire ends back onto the springs. We did this on both sides and works great. Now you can drive over it and not break the wire.

That's the way we do a hot fence, but with a spring handle on it, that's a pretty good idea.

Do I need to buy extra batteries for the collar, or do they last long enouigh I'm not cought trying to find batteries all the time for them.

I've had innotek and their customer service bit when I needed help. I use petsafe now and their service has always been top notch! I guess I've been using the inground type for about 12 or 13 years?

I have an adjustable wireless one and it works well. Just follow the instructions so your dog will learn the boundaries.

I am interested in these. But I have a pit bull (No not mean and not tough) but I worry about her getting used to it. She does have a high pain tolerance. I also worry about her chasing a squirrel to the other side, then being too scared to come back.

It's either $200 for one of these, or $1000 for a fence and a bunch more labor. THoughts?
