You have to be twenty-one, unlike some who think you have to be eighteen.

Texas has no laws regarding possession of handguns, shotguns, or rifles by persons 18 years or older without felony convictions; a rifle, shotgun, or other long-barreled firearm may be carried openly, however, a permit to carry is required for handguns (issued only to those 21 and older), and they must be concealed.
However, to PURCHASE a handgun, you must be 21 or older in every state, per federal law in order to purchase from a federally licensed dealer. You can, however, purchase a handgun at 18 in a private sale.

Sippy I'm not saying you are wrong because I honestly don't know the right answer for private sale age, but Wikipedia would not be my reference of choice for legal matters.

"The only remaining way for an 18-20-year-old to legally purchase a handgun is in a face-to-face transaction with a seller who lives in the same state as the buyer."

21 for a handgun, "no firearm" may be sold to anyone younger than 18,, you may not legally buy a handgun under the age of 21, it may be given to you by a parent or other legal guardian, you ay not carry it on or about your person unless that guardian is with you, but you may not carry if for the purpose of carrying,, you can go to the range or out to hunt , but they have to be with you it is legal to buy long guns under 21 but over 18
