Has anyone ever done this w/ a bow? I'm going elk hunting this September and if you have a bear tag and come upon one there is no extra charge. Should I be concerned about stalking up close to a bear? I've heard that the black are much less aggressive than the brown, they're still a bear... so.... puts a little doubt in my head. I've crawled up on really big hogs before, but this is a little different. Also I've heard bears a had to track because the would holes close up so fast. Is there any input on that one???

I know blacks kill more people a year than browns. The sow with cubs are the worst situation you can get around. I've been around a bunch up of bears up close while in a tree and a handful while on the ground. Had one sniffing my guides hat while we were glassing moose sitting in a blueberry patch almost asleep.
I personally wouldn't be worried about it, respect them yes but not worried.
Holes don't close up. If anything the hair absorbs the blood and lets less hit the ground. If you make a good shot you'll see them go down. They die easy because their lungs aren't as big or developed as deer. A bear is the predator and doesn't need to run daily to stay alive. A deer does so a deer has evolved a larger set of lungs that can sustain them longer while running.

Grizz are territorial and attack to defend their turf. Black bears attack to eat. Any well placed shot using equipment suited for deer will work on a bear. I grew up in PA and have had several blacks stalk me. Gets your blood pounding. Usually, when you have a weapon there is no contest. There is always the occasional big boar that is trying to make a reputation for himself, but this is rare. Bears that have not been hunted are much most dicy.

Where are you going? How much extra is the tag? I know you said the bear is free, but you still have to pay for the tag, right?
I'm going this September and yeah, I have to by the tag. Its only like $350. We're going to Colorado Unit 41 and all the tags are OTC. Its a drop camp hunt on public land so if you have a tag any game you see if fair game.
