Question about skinning deer and getting hair on the hams

I skin my deer head down. Inevitably I get hair on the hams.

What do you guys do to keep the hair off? I know some skin head up, may have to try it.

One thing I was thinking is to use the golf ball trick and just use the winch to pull it off as I winch it up. Anyone use that method?

I have used a rock and my 4-wheeler to pull the hide off before. Anymore i just try and keep them as clean as I can and then just wash really good before processing it. Since I have started processing at home and we keep them iced down for several days before processing it seems like hair is not nrealy the problem it used to be for me.

Yep...we were talking about this at camp today. We try to keep off what you can but don't go to any extreme fancy measures. Good old fashion water before they go in the cooler works for me every time. If you have access to warm (not hot) water even better....

That is one thing I would like to make is a pump/water containment system.

My lease does not have water at the camp. I'd like to get a 30 gallon barrel and put some kind of non electric pump of some sort on it.

Only thing I've found that seems to help is when I cut the belly skin, is to cut from neck to rear, or with the way the hair lays. Still get some hair on the meat, but washes off easily before it goes in the "cooler".

I've heard of the golf all thing but never tried it. I skin mine the same way you do and just wash the hair off with cool water

If you cut the way the hair lays you get less hair. You can get a water pump that hooks to amtruck battery

Skin the deer just past the tail. Place a golf ball on hair side and push up wrap a rope around the golf ball and hook the other end to a wench or your truck and pull hide off. (Be sure to cut the head and front legs off prior to skinning) Been doing that for years makes short work of skinning. As for the hair, just wipe the hams off with a wet rag that will remove any hair.

After skinning let it sit in ice water for 4 or 5 days. This will help get the hair off and any deer smell from the hair. The meat won't dry like dry aging .

Just dont cut across the hair....cut up on the legs the way the hair runs and you wont cut near as much hair out
