    Lease questions.

I am new to this lease hunting. I don't understand the public hunting draws, and the can dos, and can't dos. So I am looking into the lease option. I am not real good with the management hunting, I grew up shooting anything that had a white tail. We didn't have antler restrictions, or age restrictions. So here is a couple questions.

    1. What kind of lease would be good for me?
    2. How much is a good price for a lease?
    3. How do you find a lease?

I am in the Army, and currently in Iraq. So it is a little hard to get out and look for one, and I won't have much time after I get home to find one. Not interested in hunting on Ft Hood, to many restrictions and BS. Any info you guys have would awesome.. Thanks...

Unfortunately, I have found it difficult to find a good lease. There are websites that offer the opportunity to find a lease, but how a lease is described and how it is in reality often don't mesh. It is really advisable to be able to look it over first and that will be impossible from Iraq. The best leases that I have been on are ones where friends have had openings on their leases. If you have anyone here in the states that can help you in that way I would encourage that. Get your friends and family here to begin asking around for you.

I would encourage you to rethink your position on management. The first years of a management program may be difficult, but in the long run you really do see more and better deer. You should have plenty of opportunity to shoot deer on a lease that is in a management program because you will need to harvest a lot of does.

You may want to consider some places that offer day lease hunting. I can personally recommend HEART OF TEXAS BOWHUNTING out toward Brady. They run a great operation. You can find them on the web.

I'm sure others will chime in with some great advice, but this is a start, for what it's worth.

I'm not out to shoot the next world record buck. I honestly don't care if I shoot a buck at all. I just enjoy being in the woods, and taking in nature. I would have no problem shooting doe. I just want a place that I can go to whenever I want, to get away. Like I said, I am new to this type of hunting. I am sure I will end up either doing the day lease, if I can find one that is affordable, or hunting on public land. Just thought I would try the regular lease thing.

I found my lease on craigslist.com
You could also check your local classified ads.
Depending on what you're looking for the price will very.
I pay $800/gun for about 200 - 250 acres but it's just me and my dad (2 guns, $1,600) on the place.
But we have no running water or electric and can't park a camper at the owners request.
Which would bother me more if my sister didn't live 15 min. down the road.

We just have the rules set by the state as guide lines.
We are allowed guests but they shoot our allotted amount of deer.
We are responsible for all stands, feeders, and corn/protein.
This is pretty much what we were looking for.

I would expect to pay more if we had any of the following things:
        High fence
        Water
        Electric
        Camp site
        Provided corn/protein
        More land
        Management deer rules.
        A club house/cabin
        Food plots

Hope I've helped a little. Wish you were closer to me, I'd let you hunt as my guest as a personal thanks for your career choice! My barings are off a bit,,, where exactly is Coppers Cove from the Gatesville area?
If you're willing to make the drive next year, I'll still have you.

I'm not the best with directions, but Cove is about 30 minutes or so from Gatesville, (I think).. I found a lease on another forum, that is about $1000 per bow/shotgun. It is a deer, hog, duck lease.... I don't need a bunkhouse or anything. I would be willing to put up feeders, blinds, stands and all that. Just trying to get into the woods again. The info you have given has helped.
Thanks for the offer to hunt next year. Not sure how far you are, but I will definatly keep it in mind. Thanks..

Well heck, your closer to my lease than I am. Lol
I actually hunt about 7 miles NW of Gatesville in Pancake.
Deffinately keep it in mind about the offer!

$1000 ain't to bad. As long as you're happy with what you have.

I'm sure there's cheaper out there but you never know what your gonna get until you get out there and put in some leg work.

And there's waaaay more expensive leases as well.
I say, if it's a place that you're happy with and has the aminities that yourhappy with and happy with the price, then you've found what your looking for.

That lease will let you use shotgun but not a rifle???
I guess it the need comes about, slug it up! Lol
I like to hunt with bow as much as possible, but if by the end of the season I don't have the freezers filled, the lead starts flying around the lease!

              Keep in touch!

I haven't gotten all the facts about that place yet, still looking into it. I would be just as happy with the bow. comes down to it, I would go to a day lease to get a deer if i had to. it is about a 2 hour drive from cove to the lease i am looking at. defiantly something that i am looking into. may be a good first lease for me. Not to expensive, has some pics of deer and hogs.

Yeah, i looked it up. only about 40 miles to pancake from cove. I will defiantly stay in touch.
