How are javelina regulated in Texas?

I am not hunting them, I have never hunted them, they are not in my area that I hunt, I have just always been curious. Counties where they are prominent, and I guess all over Texas there is a bag limit of 2 per liscensed year on javelina's with no closed season. There are no javelina tags on a liscense, so how are they regulated? Is it just an understood honor system or what? If this is the case, the state is putting a lot of trust in hunters hands, but I don't guess javi's are a really sought after that much either...I am just thinking out loud.

Okay I understand that, but how would a warden know if you killed 2 yesterday and you shouldn't have 2 dead in your pickup bed today?

My thoughts are: if the state is going to take the time to put out regulations, they should make enforcement of those regulations possible...there seems to be a loop hole from all the info I have so far.

Tommy, bottom line is that they aren't closely regulated, as is the case with much non-migratory texas game. The owness is on the landowner/hunter to be a steward of wildlife. It's a bit different philosophy than many states.

It is a bit of a loophole, but I think javalina's saving grace is their fast reproductive rate, and their stink. . . .

I've never understood the javelina bag limit. They are like cockroaches. On many a hunt I've filled my yearly quota within minutes of each other. You see them almost every time you hunt down south.

The same question could be asked of dove, quail, ducks, etc. No tags for those either. Pretty much on the honor system.

Its not the same because there is no yearly limit on the game animals above. That is what threw me. If there are yearly limits, I would think there should be tags...regardless of how they breed...but hell what do I know.

From what I remember, at least in South Texas, there was no limit on javelina. But not too long ago, I think they were hit with a leprosy outbreak that thinned their numbers considerably, hence the two a year limit to ease a little pressure off the herd.

Honor system. Plus, by the time you clean the 2nd one you will be telling yourself, "Boy, I'm never going to do this again!"

Ken you're not kidding, just dragging one off to clean is enough to make you not want to shoot another. The biggest problem that people have with the Javellina is that they do not know that it is a game animal and tend to hunt it illegally, the animal tends to be a pest, and on lot of property the owner has a depredation permit that will allow for harvest year around with unlimited numbers taken all the way down to zero. The last thing I will say if you are going to take a game animal (Javi included) make sure that you and or the landowner are legal and can back your story if you get questioned by a Game Warden.

Aw - once you get past the stink and the fleas, they ain't all that bad!

I too have often wondered why they don't require a tag.

So you can only take 2 and not shoot them at night?

                              Yall are ALL wrong!

The harvesting of javelina's in all of Texas and parts of New Mexico and Arizona is guarded and monitored solely by Hlope! He is wired into the javelin network and will run down those who break the set limits with a modern day El Camino (The ROO!) WITH a Porsche Boxster engine! Be one with the javelin and you have nothing to fear. Step over the line, and feel the wrath.

Hlopes arch nemesis is Deerslayer who during one season in old Mexico laid to waste hundreds if not thousands of the flea ridden buggers, including a video'd kick to the bean bag of a unsuspecting javi feasting on corn. Because this was in another country Hlope can do nothing but put bad voodoo on the Deerslayer through the spirit of the javelin network. To this day, Deerslayer has never had the javi's herd a trophy buck to him. A site he is sure to never witness. Hlope is consatntly harassed as buddies from around the world forward Deerslayers clip to him thinking he would enjoy it as it makes it's quarterly rounds. Sounds like that would make a good comic book! I personally have seen the light, no more javi's for me. I don't get to hunt much at all, but don't need all that javi voodoo on me at the same time.

Just jacking with Hector a little. How can we talk about javi's without including Hector.
