Protein Feeding Question??????

IF they will eat it, the only harm protein can do is to your wallet. It helps attract deer, keep them throughout the season, and most importantly it does improve body condition and antler growth. In my opinion it is most helpful in the post-rut period, because it keeps them in good shape and allows an easy/easier transition out of the cold winter months into the antler growing season. In a good rain year, the deer won't rely as much on protein during the spring and summer, but having it available after the rut can make all the difference when it comes time to start growing antlers. I can usually tell within a couple days when the rut is over because the deer just start killing the protein.

In my opinion...I think even if the ranches around you are not feeding protein and you are then the animals in the area will stay around your ranch for the food availability and this will make it habit for them to visit your place in season also. It may not help them grow horns and literally "manage" the deer herd but I would recommend feeding but I would buy cheaper feed to put in it than the expensive protein pellets. i would get horse or cattle feed at a lower price. I think also if you just bow hunt the area it causes less pressure on the animals rather than guns going off. Then when the guns start blasting around you the animals will head your way for the peace and quiet and the food source when it gets cold and the vegetation dies off.

But that is true! Between our places, we only have one side that is open to other property besides the highway.....

protein has helped bring so many more deer onto our property that we sling it out of our spinfeeders as well. Don't know if it is just this particular protien we have been feeding or what, but they KILL this stuff over the Record Rack that we tried the first year. We had 10-15 deer EVERY night all night long at each of our 3 protien feeders from Feb1 - Spt1 of last year and everyone of them stayed around once we started slinging the same protien out of our spincast feeders. We lost the place, but the new leasees are going to really appreciate it! There were a few of them that should be REAL nice this next season.

We hunt just west of you.We feed protein threw timed protein feeders. We use to feed thru demand feeders but the deer were breaking the budget. At our place they were going thru 2000# every 3 weeks. We started buying the 2000# bales of alfalfa from simon brothers. The bales last anywhere from a month to 2 months and you can pay for a bale and a half (3000#) to every 2000# of protein. The hay is about 24% protein from what the feed store says.It will attract more deer for sure.
