I have a platform built between 2 trees and the floor of the platform is 20 feet off the ground. I've been busted by scent but never busted by sight. If I had a tripod, I wouldn't want it that high.
It depends on the surrounding cover. I have one that is 12 foot and I have one that is sixteen. When I first got up in the 16', I thought it was too tall, but I did not get busted in that stand near as much as I did in the 12' stand. To me, the higher stand gives an advantage over the lower stand.
I have one tripod that is 16' and two tree stands that are 20', I did hunt a 13' tripod this past weekend and believe (for me atliest) that is too short, for a rifle, hight doesn't really matter unless you want to see over brush, but for bow hunting, I think you want to be as high as safely possible.
