You are correct. Haven't been there, or seen any of them. But like some of the bucks I've been see-n come out of there, there has to be a prized beauty in there some where
Places like you and I get to hunt I think are not affected as much. Its the places they pile too many people on and hammer ANYTHING that suffers...just like Texas! And like it or not....the locals dont help the herd any!
Your right. If you got enough country you will be ok. Seems there are a ton of 50-100 acre places especially in the farm land that get hammered. People tend to overlook that ranch country. Hope they keep overlooking.
Are feeders legal and are they even really needed? I would prefer to not use one, not because ethical reasons but sometimes they are more trouble than they are worth for me. If it isn't the battery it is the solar panel messing up or corn getting jammed ect.
Feeders are legal but they aren't effective. Instead go and dump about 1000lbs of corn on the ground. You will have deer come in all day.
Best deer hunting that is close to Texas. Tag is $322.50 and the license is $75.34 for out of state hunters. They usually have leftover tags but those sell out in about 30 days. I don't believe you can judge the kill rate by the number of tags issued. Several of the guys on my lease have not killed over a several season period. I have not harvested a deer on our lease over the past two seasons. Getting on a quality place with live water and cover (trees/plum thickets, draws, etc.) will cost you between $3,000 and $4,000 per season.
Born and raised there and bowhunted there since 1965. Just means I’m old.
Just use Google Earth and have a look at Kansas. All of the square patchwork appearance you see are public county roads and are typically 1 mile by 1 mile or 640 acres. I suppose someone could lease several thousand acres and claim it is somehow protected from poaching but don’t listen to it. Just imagine a couple of guys cruising the roads at 30mph with a 250 yard effective range on either side of the road. They shoot, throw out a marker and come back in the middle of the night. Just traditional “road hunting” but even if they don’t kill the buck in the game cam pics, these guys can send deer running into a neighboring State. Only barren western Kansas has larger tracts of land that don’t have semi-public (roads) access.
Otherwise, pull up the Wichita Eagle on-line and look at the ads. If I didn’t have access to private land I’d do the outfitter thing and get the itch out of my system.
From what I'm reading in the regs, you apply for either rifle, muzzle loader or archery.
I would like to archery hunt through out the season and hunt the rut with rifle. Is this possible?
Can someone clear this up for me?
Non residents are only allowed one either sex tag. You can buy antlerless tags over the counter if you have the either sex tag. You can only use one method. You can bow hunt all season. If you bow hunt during rifle season, you must wear orange. You cannot bow hunt and then rifle hunt. FYI, by the time rifle season opens, the rut is usually over. When you apply, you must know what unit you want or hunt in. You can select 2 different units, but they must be next to each other.
You get one tag. You have to choose either archery or rifle for that one tag. Usually the rut is over by the time rifle season rolls around. The deer antlers are also busted up pretty good by the time rifle season starts.
