    AR-15s in Deer Calibers

Been looking at getting one for a long time. What are my options if I don't want to go up to the heavier AR-10 Frame?

Plusses & Minuses of each calibre??

All I know of are the 6.8spc, and the 6.5 Grendel. Hear good things about the grendel, but seems that it's a hand-loader's round, or at least hasn't quite caught on yet.

anything that will fit in the ar15 lower is going to be a good round to use. 25wssm(expsneive but faaast), 458 socom(hard to find), 6.8spc spec2 barrel(ammo can be had online from SSA all day long for 17/box, or find slightly slower remington ammon on the shelf at places), and wildcat ctgs based on the 223 casing(hand load only). 204 if you want to as well(ammo on the shelf). biggest issue is mag availability and reliabiliy for ammo not made for 223 mags if you plan to use a plain jane 223 mag. dont count out 223 in good bullet selection as well.

99% of my rilfe hunting is with a 6.8mm SPC.

There is a little more commerical ammo selection for the 6.8 over the 6.5 but the 6.5 generally preforms better and ranges over 200 yds.

Silver State Armory, Hornady, Double Tap, Remington, and a few other make factory rounds for the 6.8. Of those Silver State Armory makes some of the best ammo.

As far as other commerical options there is the 30 AR, 450 bushmaster, 204 Ruger,7.62x39 etc

Handload options are to numerous for me to remeber them all but out of them my choice would be the .458 SOCOM

Yea, was looking hard at the remmington R-25 in 7mm-08, but with optics and a full mag, you're looking at an 11lb rifle. . . that's pretty hefty.

            I've got a
            .223
            6.8 spc
            .243 wssm
            .458 socom

The 243 wssm has been my "go-to" gun this year.

6.8 or 30 Rem. 223 isn't an ideal deer round.

for deer/hogs the 6.8 and 6.5 are 300 yard rifles.
the nudge goes to the 6.8 due to a much much larger selection of uppers/rifles and ammo.

Doesn't the 6.8 have much poorer ballistics than the 6.5?

                    It's not light but the R 25 I have in 243 is a shooter

Yes and I have owned both 6.5 and the 6.8. I still have the 6.5 grendel

I want to get the .50 Baeowolf upper and put a beating on the hogs out to 200 yds.

Unfortunately from a $ standpoint ARs like to be .223s. Looking at a 6.8 though. Hard for me to justify for hunting alone. 6.8 I can rationalize as a double duty defensive gun.
