The comment about the teacher putting ideas into our childrens' heads made me think about this poem that my daughter Kaitlynn wrote for a 5th grade assignment. I had no idea that she wrote this until the very end of school as it was part of a year long project that each student was required to do as part of how they were raised, who they were, what their beliefs were and what they wanted to be. The main thing is that we get and keep our children involved in the great outdoors if that is what we choose. We have to start them early and tell them that there are always going to be people out there who will disagree with what we do and will do anything to change their minds, because they are the most easily influenced. They have to be taught at a very young age to stand up for what they believe in.
I AM
By Kaitlynn Edwards
I am a hunter
I wonder if I will shoot a good buck
I hear the deer in the forest
I see them emerge from the woods
I want to shoot a mountain lion
I am a hunter
I pretend to shoot a roadrunner
Ifeel excited when I shoot something
I touch the antlers of a buck
I worry that I will make a bad shot
I cry when we have to leave the ranch
I am a hunter
I understand that I won't always get the deer I want
I say I need some improvement when I shoot an animal in the wrong spot
I dream about shooting a 15-point deer
I try to look at deer and memorize them
I hope I will shoot a mountain lion
I am a hunter
