Advice on Getting $$$ for Wrecked Sedan

Hey guys, my buddy's pregnant wife was in an accident this past week and her Mazda was wrecked in the front pretty bad. Unfortunately, they did not have comp & collision insurance so he is stuck getting junkyard pricing for his car and buying a new one w/cash. The thing is, most junkyards are quoting him about $300 for his wrecked car.

It's a 1999 Mazda Protege and I was hoping he could get more for it than that. Do you guys know anywhere that he could sell something like this for top dollar (i.e. maybe get $1,000 for the "parts?")?

    Thanks guys.

We just went through this with my daughter 99 honda. I finally put it on craig's list with picture and good description of damage. I put in the add no parting out, all goes at once. It took a couple of months but I finally sold it for $750. It was worth a lot more than that parted out but I didn't have the time to do that so this was the best option for us. I got about twice what a wrecking yard would have given. Be aware that you will get all kinds of strange calls, text messages and low ball offers but it all finally worked out. I learned to put comp & collision on one if I couldn't afford to buy another and not worry about the cost.

that thing looks fixable to me for a lot less than buy another car. But I can't see the other side either

He got a quote today and it was going to be $3,000 to repair it. It's only worth $3,800 or so in good condition, so it will almost certainly be a junker.
