I've hunted just SE of Dryden and the whitetail seem to be of the smaller, desert variety. With that said, an occasional 130-140" would be seen or harvested on the few and far between wet years. They also seemed to be much more prevalent along the creeks in that country.

I used to hunt in Terrell county, north of Dryden about 40 miles. Between Sheffield and Sanderson. The biggest whitetail we ever killed off of it was about 140" and biggest mule deer was almost 170". It was my favorite place to bowhunt, we would generally see 15-20 deer a sitting. Good luck

I hunt between Sheffeild and Sanderson and I love it. They are not the biggest deer in Texas but I just love the terrain there. We also have some mule deer, just not a whole lot of them. My dad killed a beautiful 8 point this year out there. He was 17.5" wide with 10" g2's and 8"g3's. He was a great deer for out there.

I have some friends that hunt near Dryden and they have killed some good deer over the years.

Just make sure wherever your lease is that they have water weels, because there is a lot of land in that area that doesnt have any water.

I would love to go back out there if the price is right and a big ranch. That is rough country and lots of places to hunt.
When I was younger my parents nearly forgot me sitting on a ridge hutning and started back to camp before they remembered to go back and get me. We hunted around sheffield and we saw lots of deer just sitting and watching they travel along canyon creeks or just walking ridges. Probably saw 50 deer a day.

This deer was killed last Wednesday at my lease off of 290, about 10 miles east of Sheffield on the Crockett County side. We have some nice 130"-140" 8's and 10's on a regular basis. Mule deer have been seen, but none killed. Lots of turkeys and some javelina, blue quail also. Dry, wild country.

I had a huge place, 34,000 acres that started just south of Dryden and went all the way to the river. I was only on it for 1 year. Not, many deer, and dang sure not many big deer.
                    Cool country though!!

I wish I knew how to post photos and I would show you the 1 my dad killed after thanksgiving. Also, about 5-6 years ago my dad killed a really cool deer out there it has double main beams one 1 side and both beams match eachother, it is a 12 points, not much on score but a really cool conversation piece.

We hunt once a year on the Brown Ranch, about 20-30 miles north of Dryden. We have killed several 120- to 130-class deer in the last 5 years. This year was the same with the exception of one: my buddy killed a 153 2/8 typical 12 pt. The mature deer are pretty big-bodied and we see several muley crosses. There are alot of otherwise good deer with no brow tines, especially the crosses, on that place. I love hunting out there. If you can get on some water you will see alot of deer. It's also much better hunting when it's really cold.

My Buddy owns 220 acres 8 miles North of Dryden.(Meyers Canyon) He has Whitetail and Mule deer. Some nice ones.... we only bow hunt the bucks, so, we have nothing big on the ground. 11 pointer is the biggest. Water is king... you will have a lot more deer if you have a well.

You have to be careful shooting the deer...mainly doe. The Game Wardens will tell you their are not crossbreeds....even though the state of Texas did a survey and found 8% of the deer are in Terrel county. They love giving tickets for shooting crossbreeds...as they will say it is a doe shot out of season. It is up to you to prove it.
They go by the tail...they say any black on tail means Mule deer, which is not true. But the Muley,s have a lot of white around their butt. They also go by leg glands and tear ducts in the eyes.
I have hunted by Sanderson and Dryden for the last 25 years and love it there.
