    Computer trouble.....HELP

My computer, which my employees clock-in and out on, isn't keeping proper time. I replaced the battery on the motherboard, but it is still losing a lot of time. I have re-set the time from the control panel countless times. What else besides the MB battery would cause this??

    Thanks

Depending on the model of hte computer, i have had several HP 7600sff that the battery was good, but the time kept sliding away. HP was replacing the entire mainboard to fix it and it was a CMOS issue, not the battery.

            kind of leaning towards this.

older machine? may be time for an upgrade. desktop PC's are cheap.

if you need some local help/advice let me know. I am not a contractor or consultant looking to make money off you. I am just an IT guy that wouldnt mind giving a fellow TBHer some advice or a hand.

If the PC is running with out being shut down you shouldnt loose time. The battery keeps the time when the system doent have power. If you do se a time lose it should be no more than a few minutes over several weeks if PC stays powered on.

If it is the PC you've repaired, it could be the mother / systems board has a faulty clock chip. This would be a board replacement.

If you have it networked it could be getting time from a network Time Protacal (NTP) device, just onther PC or server in the office. This would mean your problem is on the primary system that distribute time on the network. This is normaly a what called an Active Directory server.

              Good Luck

assuming this is for his local UPS store I assume there is no AD server. Thus leaving it to be the MB...

But I am not entirely sure how the UPS franchise stuff works...

No sense in bothering with the board if its not under warranty just replace the PC

It is networked with 3 other computers, but it is only the Primary that is losing time. The computer is about 3.5 years old and OF COURSE the warranty ran out 2 months ago. Probably the MB. Guess I will just make sure they clock in and out using only the secondary pc.

                  Thanks everyone

its probably just a workgroup that you have setup to share amongst the machine's...

                    good luck...

Check all of the server times. It has to be getting its time from another computer.

If you are logging into a "Domain" it gets it's time from the domain controller(server, active directory). Check out the server time.

If it has internet access, you could download atomic clock sync....

Download Atomic Clock Sync latest version for Windows free. Atomic Clock Sync latest update: October 30, 2024

I have this on all my computers. It's a simple and free software that just keeps your computer clock accurate.
