    Oilfield workers/geologist question.

I am going to school and majoring in geology with a minor in civil engineering. Is there alot of jobs for geologist in the DFW area? I know the Barnett shale is in the news alot but im not for sure that they use alot of geologic workers? anyone that has experience in the field I would appreciate your input!

If you want to work as a Geologist, then the work is limited as each rock doctor can cover several rigs.....However, with a degree in Geology you can work as a Mud Logger (low pay...very low pay) or as an MWD Hand, which has quite good pay.....when do you graduate??

It seems to me that geologist are involved in the development of the field, while engineers will have a job during the life of the field. I think the title of "Engineer" opens a lot more doors in the petroleum industry than the title "geologist". You may consider a "Geological Engineering" degree. This degree will open doors in mineral extraction (or in Geothechics if you have more interest in the civil engineering part of it). You can go all out and get a Petroleum Engineering degree if you really want to be an engineer in the oilfield. I haven't done much work in the Barnett, but I've been in a lot of oil fields throughout the world. I'm sitting in the Anchorage airport on my way home from the North Slope as I write this. PM me if you would like to talk about my experience as an engineer in the oilfield. I'll be back home in Texas tomorrow afternoon.

Come and see us during your summer break. We do alot of internships for guys just like you to get you a fairly good look at what goes on for your major. You can have a look also at our website and judge for yourself. www.pinntech.com We are owned by Halliburton and offer a wide range of jobs for guys with your degrees and are always looking for a good geo. Pinnacle Technologies, a Halliburton Service. We have offices in the DFW area also.

I would switch that if I were you. Major in engineering with a minor in geology. Most operators will not hire a geologist without an MS. You can get on as a geo tech, but typically not a staff geologist. There are other jobs you could get into though, especially on the service side of things (downhole tools, motors, drill bits, drilling fluids, etc). The other reason I would suggest to major in engineering over geology it that there are probably more jobs out there in engineering than geology. Geo tends to be somewhat of a niche market. People will always need roads, bridges, towers, etc. Not that many people seem to care what quartz content is in that granite on their kitchen counter.

Just my two cents of being there and done exactly what you're saying.

What does any of that have to do with selling bits.

This, I would not be a mud logger as stated it just doesnt pay well enough. I'm an MWD Hand and you could do this with that. Lot of time gone from home but you wont find a job that will pay you better

I work for LEAM, we actually have had quite a few DD's come over from schlumberger lately, on a job with a couple of them right now.
