    Colorado Bend State Park

Got drawn for the rifle hunt there next week and don't know much about the area. Have any of yall ever been there, and could give me some tips of what to expect??? We can take deer and exotics, can't wait to go.

My Dad and I went on a doe/spike hunt there about 5 yrs ago. We saw lots of deer and turkeys. Try to get one of the 2 spots that front the river, they were the best spots when we were there. Out of the 3 of us we killed 5 does and the other group on the river killed 4. Good luck and it is beautiful country.

I think there are supposed to be 20 hunters on this hunt, 4 in our group. I hope there are some exotics running around, as they are fair game. What type of vegetation and terrain is out there? The guy said they have some stands, but we are bringing some of our own just in case.

you can only bring corn that has on the bag... 20 PPB or less in aflotoxin.

it is a very thick area with not a lot of access. Bring a ground blind or tripod.

their blinds are semi circle of field fence wire.

A coworker of mine just got back and he took a small buck and a doe. He said he saw a few deer but not a lot. Said it is covered in cedar. Good luck and be safe!!

Over the years we'be seen several hogs, axis, and goats near the river. Water is key out thee of course as there's not a ton of it away from the river. If you're camping in the park beware of the racoons - seriously. They have OVERRUN that place and they will ruin anything you take with you that can be ruined...even the paint job on your truck. Last year they absolutely killed my paint climbing into the bed of my truck from the tires and bumper. There wasn't even anything back there!!! Good luck with the hunt - that is some pretty terrain.

Been drawn there once. There was 4 of us as well. Ask for the compartment to the left of the campground along the river. I can't remember the number. If you can get it, there is a hiking trail that goes to the primitive camp spot. Go past it and start huntin. My nephew shot a monster 10 pt there. His dad missed a huge 8 just past the primitive camp site. Right before you drop off the hill to the camp grounds, to the left is some sort of dump station (trash). About 50 yds past it, a missed a beautiful 9 pt with my bow, then a doe, and finally on the last morning, shot a spike with the rifle at 10 yds!!!
Never saw any exotics nor were any killed.
You should see a lot of deer in the camp ground, but they will tell ya that is off limits!!
It's a great place to hunt.

Thanks for all the input, I can't wait to get down there. I will definitely try to get a river pasture, if they give us a choice. Where ever we end up, we will have a fun hunt and hopefully get some LDP's. I will give a report when we get back.

                          Anyone else?

If I'm not mistaken, the 2 compartments, left and right of the camp ground on the river are the biggest compartments, which most of the time goes to the bigger groups. When you show up, and do the paper work part, just let them know that you would prefer "X" number compartment. About every draw hunt I've been on, they try to please.
And if you do get that one, and for some reason yall don't see any deer, 3 of yall get up on the bluff overlooking the camp ground and have the 4th guy "flush" the deer up to ya from out of the camp ground!!!
