    Define A CULL

Not looking for an arguement about management practices. No answer is right or wrong, just looking for some ideas.

"Our definition is a 4.5 year old deer with 7 points or less, any age over 1.5 with a spike on one side, and a spike with horns longer than his ears."

We have hill country deer, and our larger 8's are trophies to us, hence the 7 or less rule. Still not sure if we should be shooting spikes, but this is how we currently have it set.

I'd add in any older deer with naturally missing brow tines... WAY back when, that was our first classification of culls... no brow tines, then it went to missing just one... We don't shoot yearling spikes with any, and I mean any kind of bump fork or even the beginnings of something that looks like a branch... stick-horn spikes, we take out. We don't refer to them as culls, but management bucks... We don't know for sure what they might become, but we need to take a certain number of buck deer, and there's better than a 50/50 chance a stick horn spike will not develop into a deer we want in our trophy herd, so we take 'em out. We also take out 8 points that are 4.5 or older and 13" inside spread or less as a cull... a deer that AR counties would never be able to take... that would be a breeder buck for them until he dies...

Similar for us but will add 4.5 yr old 8's that are stuck around the 100" level, usually we have a history with those deer. 2.5 yrs that have a spike.

A cull buck is any Whitetail you don't wish to pass on genetics to the herd. My opinion, not necessarily that of our landowner, is any 3 1/2 or older 8t (or less) point or a 5 1/2 year old or older 9pt. Additionally, a post Mature Doe is also a Cull to me. I can't see any differentiated outlook upon "Management" or "Cull". Those two words mean the same exact thing!

            My definition is pretty easy:

For the land your managing all bucks fall into one of three easily defined categories...

Trophy -- A deer you hunt hard for and no doubt you are shoulder mounting him.

Management -- A deer you think looks neat and has some good features but will never develop, this deer you will probably do a Europeen Mount on or be one you keep at camp as something to talk about.

Cull -- This is a buck that has shown you he has no desirable traits, after you take them out to don't care what happens to the horns (chunk them in a pile).

I believe this works well for any program, because it doesn't set hard and fast numbers so it can grow with your program.

And it differs for everybody and differs everywhere. Some people take off the freaks, some take of the ones with no browtines, some take away 140-150s that are 5.5 or older and just arent satisfied with them. Know of a place thats even know to cull 160's because they dont meet the standards. Its all different. Also I consider managment and culls the same.

I know a ranch where a 171 main frame 8t point was killed as a Cull. Made book... But Cull. Trash buck to this particular ranch.

A cull is a deer the land manager does not see fit to repopulate the heard. It all depends on what type of deer you want to reproduce. Some want points and mass other want spread and mass it all depends. Some people cull bucks that are trpohies in my eyes.

I know it varies greatly. I was looking for your personal lease or ranch rules.

In that case we cull anything we believe won't help to ranch for the future which includes any mature deer at least 5.5 that is 150 or less. So far we've take a 3 pointer that score almost 90 B/C that was 4.5, a 9 that scored 140 that was 5.5, two 8's that maybe would touch 110 that were 5.5 and 7.5. And this weekend I'm after a 8 that is in the mid 140's and 5.5 or older. Hope thoes examples give you a idea
