    2005 Excursion 6.0 4x4

    Hey everyone, I'm thinking of getting an Excursion and was wondering what type of gas mileage I would get out of it (not hauling anything but the wife, kid, and dogs. I'm just not sure if it is worth the money to get a programmer for it (like Banks or Bully Dog or whatever). Also what kind of mileage decrease do you see when you put a lift kit on a truck?

    Sorry for all the wierd questions, just not sure if it's going to be a gain in fuel economy for me to go with a diesel or just get an expedition EL.

    any help will be greatly appreciated

    I have looked at them and if I could find a good price on one I would buy it. I don't have any personal experience, but I have talked to people that have them, so this is what I have heard. It is a heavy vehicle, so the diesel is advised to carry their own weight. Gas will do it, but not as easily. With stock tires and without added weight (ranch hands, racks etc.) I have heard they get in the 17-20 mpg range. 4wd will affect that too. It's not the lift that hurts the mileage, it's the collateral stuff, bigger tires etc. I'm sure you already know the history of the 6.0 so I'll save the keystrokes on that. I got lucky with a good one in a F350.

    Programmers are scary in the 6.0, they can cause issues. I have one on mine, but I have also had a bunch of work done (head gaskets, head studs etc) to keep things together. If you get one for mileage, they work good, but if you like to crank it up to full power (like me), things like to come apart

    Like I said, if I could find a good deal on one, I would buy it. Also it will not fit in a standard height garage door, might consider that if you are going to keep it in the garage and have a 7' door. When they first came out I was building in an affluent neighborhood and as soon as they hit the D'ships, I had them pouring in the 'hood. After about 3 days I saw all my clients driving their "old" SUV's again. I asked one of my clients what happened to his new Excursion, he said it wouldn't fit in the garage

      True, I figured it wouldn't fit in the Garage and i'm "okay" with that, and the only programmer I would get would be for fuel economy, not really interested in power. I hear there are problems with the 6.0, but I'm not sure how many of those problems are from just everyday driving or caused by them hauling things. if I can get 17-20 MPG then i'll be doing good in my opinion.

        my 6.0 gets around 13 mpg no matter how I drive it. Sucks a lot of diesel going to the lease and back....too much

        and I dont trust it. I only have 88,000 miles and that is nothing...actually less than that cause at like 6-8,000 miles they had to put in a brand new 6.0. I would stay away from a 6.0 if at all possible.. heads, egr, just a matter of when

            True, but it's also true for my expedition and any big truck out there.

              i have the 05' 6.0 in an F250 with right at 100k on it. disconnected the EGR valve on day one, installed a superchips microtuner on the economy setting, add stanadyne fuel additive or lucas at every fill up and run 305/65 R17 tires. I get right at 17 mph on country roads and probably 15 on the rare occasion i get to do any extended city driving. So far it's been a great motor, i've only replaced breaks in the last 5 years.
              I honestly believe that the additive makes a big difference by adding lubricity to low sulfur fuel.

                so did disconnecting the EGR valve do anything? do you get check engine lights with it? I hear it's an easy clean every couple of months.
