I want to do a European Mount of a a buck I shot a couple of years ago and the antlers have faded. Any suggestions regarding what color stain to use. I would like to go for a light brown. Thanks for any suggestions.

They sell antler stain at Van Dykes Taxidermy Supply....Or a Dark oak works well too,and is much Cheaper -

If the horns are dried out, treat them with linseed oil BEFORE you use any stain. You'll be able to better control the stain. otherwise the dry antlers will soak up tons of stain and you'll end up with monotone antlers that don't look realisticComment

PHC has the best advice. I've used good 'ol stain from Home Depot.Comment

X2 on the linseed oil then use Van Dykes Antler stain...mix with a bit of acetone or paint thinner to control how dark you want it.Comment

Coffee works pretty good, gives a nice even color. I did one for my son ill see if i can get the wife to take a pic and send to me so i can post it.Comment

I use deer antler stain (from Vandyke’s taxidermy: www.vandykestaxidermy.com). However, in the past I've used Formby’s Light Walnut Wood Stain found at Wal-mart (it is a liquid form).
Apply lightly to antlers with Q-tip (around base). Apply stain to rest of antler with a 6" x 6" piece of old t-shirt (make sure stain does not get on the skull).
Let dry for 24 hours
Superglue teeth along inside of gumline.
Apply a sealer coat to the skull and antlers. I use satin Krylon clear acrylic (spray can). I prefer the satin (the gloss looks too shiny).Comment
