In my opinion, you can't kill a monster unless you hunt in an area that produces monsters. If I had a chance to hunt a place that produces a lot of 140 class deer and has large deer numbers or a place that produces 170+ class deer with few deer numbers, I will choose the latter.
I think the whole allure of hagerman is the fact it is public land, a trophy buck on public land is kinda the holy grail for some die hard bowhunters, you definiely could get a big buck on a private lease easier. For guys who are used to hunting feeders or unpressured private land its a whole different ball game and unless you REALLY have your woodmanship skills honed your gonna probably be disappointed at hagerman.
I have killed a 152" 9 and 150" 8 off there on private land that backs up to the refuge but isn't it funny that Dale Moses the local Game Warden gets drawn every year.
Better check the past drawing results there wcgunns. Dale doesn't draw every year. In fact, he's missed the last several years. I don't know you, but this kind of rumor mongering nonsense is unneccessary. People say the same stuff about the refuge employees who hunt, but they don't get drawn every year either.
Grayson,
"Actually I think they should cancel the hunts there altogether, but I doubt that will happen."
Would you mind elaborating on your reasoning for that sentiment? I know there has been a semi-organized effort by a group of surrounding landowners/hunters to try and get the hunts shut down on Hagerman. You wouldn't be a party to that project, would you? Just curious on why you think a public hunt on a Federal public property paid for by our tax dollars should be shut down?
Why else would landowners want them shut down? Their local legend, "Big Boy" got shot by a Hagerman hunter....That record buck could have been any one of theirs........Some had chances...One of them shot him in the butt in 99 and he pretty much disappeared after that....then he shows up in 2000 with double drops as a 250 maybe 260" deer.......2001 rolls around, and poof he's gone due to a Hagerman hunter
That's why they want the hunts closed......They want the big deer to themselves.
I disagree wholeheartedly that it is overrated, but I am amazed, given the points you made that I've highlighted in bold, that anyone ever kills any deer there, let alone one of the big bucks.
It's like a zoo when those yahoos go running around in their Wal-Mart camo, smoking cigs, standing out in the wide open, moving stands during the middle of the day, etc. etc. It's a joke. I definitely agree they need to cut down on the number of people on each hunt. Actually I think they should cancel the hunts there altogether, but I doubt that will happen.
If they cut down on # of people and had more land per segment to hunt I would consider it but........ Like you said it will probably never happen .
Smoke-Screen? There is no way that Haggerman is overrated. Could be the most ridiculous thread ever.
Not a smoke screen at all . For those who know me I am not one to B.S. anyone . Just stating my point . Worse thread ever ? Lol I seriously doubt that one .
I don't know what kind of #'s have been recorded (deer per acre) in Hagerman but I think most would be surprised.
I have hunted 3 straight hunts/sittings in Burnet Tx, from a rifle blind, and never saw a deer. But, the time before that first one, I seen forty. The time after that third one I seen 40 again. Go figure. It's called hunting.
There are no feeders in Hagerman. That might make it tough for some folks, I don't know. But, there are wheat/green fields.
Heck, if nothing else, shoot a HOG !
For the record I don't hunt feeders . I hunt in West Texas on a 3500 acre lease . The last 2 years in a row I have killed biggest deer on our lease with a bow . That is with 9 other gun hunters and 2 weekend bow hunters . I don't gun hunt anymore . I lost interest in the mid 1980's . Not against it at all. Just doesn't turn my crank anymore .
Like I said earlier I moved to a spot where there wasn't much of a crowd and killed a doe . I even saw a 150 class buck leaving the refuge . I had a good picture of him 15 feet from my truck and my old hard drive burned up . I lost many photos .
I am bailing out on this thread now . I posted my opinion and I leave it a that . Anyone who wants to kick sand in my face about it can kick away . I won't be back to visit this thread . I was simply stating how I feel about the hunt . That said I am gone . Let the belly aching begin .

First, Dale doesn't need to get drawn every year. He has other places to hunt.
No, I'm not a party to that project, but I'll gladly take down any contact information you can provide.
Greed is the primary answer, absolutely. No reason to beat around the bush. Greed and a desire to cut down on the traffic around the refuge, including but not limited to poachers and a-holes trespassing on private land.
