We've had a long-standing policy not to allow "Vote for My ____ (insert friend, in-law, family member, dog, girlfriend's name here)" threads on the site. In most cases, they end up being hit-and-run posters only looking for votes from the masses.
We recently opted to allow a couple to participate in such a thread, mainly because they are long-time, well respected members of the site, and we thought it was kind of a cool contest. In short, we probably allowed our friendship with them to influence our decision to not only allow the thread, but sticky it to the top in an effort to help them win (which they did, btw!
)
As I feared, there have been several other similar "vote for me" threads posted in the last couple of weeks (even a couple of different members for the same contest), and of course, offense was taken when the threads were deleted. I admit I was guilty of showing favoritism in allowing one and not allowing the others, and for that I apologize.
That said, I don't want to get into allowing promotion of such contests, and ask that you refrain from posting such threads going forward.
