Well I learned a lot at my first Hagerman hunt. sorry for the long read

I did'nt get a deer had several chances at does until I actually wanted to shot one, Saw some small bucks one that really liked me he kept walking up and looking at me 3 times matter of fact. I saw a Mountain Lion in the wild for the first time about 9:30 sunday in the 35 mph winds. I learned at Hag next time I will have a mountain bike and a lock on stand, my Lone Wolf climber is great but I think a large lock on would feel better on my Butt as it is Tues evening and it is still sore. I also figured out taking thurs off and getting there before 8:00 will be mandatory for me next time other wise you waste the best day of huunting getting set up because all the places you planned are already taken met some super nice Tbhrs don't remember there screen names but all the guy's hunting the last road on Godwin, The most dissapointing thing was not getting to my stand on Sat till 6:40 because of the well documented oversleeping deal, I had a great time and hope to get picked next year, nothing like sayinig here are the woods go find the deer , I grew up hunting in Alabama no feeders there it is a different kind of hunting that is for sure,

Hagerman will challenge the most seasoned Texas hunter. You have to scout a lot and find several different backup locations. For the money you cannot beat the deal.

No need to apply next year. Why? "There are no deer up there"

Never hunted the Hag but have hunted property all around Texoma. It can be some tough hunting but like any place else you have to do some leg work to increase your odds of being successful. I'm not calling BS on you but there are some big bobcats up there. I guess it's not out of the realm of possibilites that a mountain lion was in the area but not likely. Glad you had a good time and next time I bet you will shoot that doe if presented with a shot early in the game.

I learned a lot as well. 3 most important and additional comments below:

        1. The sound of unclipping your release from the string loop when a doe is 15 yards away will set her in motion. They had also winded me.

        2. Don't just count on being in a funnel area, pick your spot in the funnel area.

        3. Bucks don't aways respond to a grunt call or canned doe grunt/bleat. Especially if he doesn't have a sparring set of antlers.

First and foremost, I enjoyed every minute of it. I saw about 12-15 deer total. One that may not have made the AR, and one that would be good on any wall. Not because of score, a freak buck- longhorn with a thorn-bush.

Wind was bad, it's enough to be up from 0230/0300 and in the stand all day, in bed at 2000 and back at it again. I almost froze Friday am, guess I'm not as young as I used to be. It seemed like between the hours and the wind it was a beating. I can only imagine what a deer goes through in the same circumstances and trying to survive.

I had does in range but behind cover, and of course standing broadside out of range. The freak buck was within 10 yards, behind a cedar tree that I wouldn't shoot through.

I found what I think may have been the best acre of land on the huntable areas, but picked the wrong tree. 30 yards either way and if my shot was true, deer down and maybe a pass for next year. I would rather hunt from a climber, the tree I chose was only good for a lock on. I used screw-in steps and it worked out fine. I had chosen the spot based on and hoping for a south wind, I didn't expect south at 10-20 and gusts to 30.

The high-on-the-hog dinner was good. I wish I had asked for seconds, but I was ready to shoot my one arrow and get back to camp and have a couple of beers and whiskey/coke.

The late start on Friday wasn't as big of a deal to me as it was others. I may be mellowing in my 40's. My spot was actually easier to get to with a little light trying to get through a thicket. Note to self- next time trim a path, who cares if someone finds it, just beat them to it on stand-set day.

We stayed at Paradise Cove campground in my fifth-wheel. Nice campground, showers were cold. Our neighbor was also hunting, I didn't get the full story, but one morning they watched the hogs come through the campground, and shortly after followed by a mountian lion. He may be a TBHr and share the story.

I really only met one hunter. He was in my area only because he had selected a primary site that someone else had chosen as well. Nice guy, Rodney. He was from the Dallas area, ran a landscape irrigation business, black Dodge Cummins. Not sure if he is a TBHr.

I'll sure put in again for the hunt, only took three years for my first permit. And why do I do it, because there are no deer at Hagerman! Good luch to the Seg C hunters.

The only way I would not shoot the first available doe that comes by is if she was trailed CLOSELY by a shooter buck.

I passed last year on a good 130 8 on the first morning, nearly only 45 min into the hunt. I will not take that chance this year, as far as the slickhead is concerned, she will take a carbon pipe it just makes the next 9 months more bearable knowing I will be hunting again, not waiting for the list.

There were deer behind the doe that I couldnt completely see. other wise I would have shot and the other doe I was a little too high in the tree climbers in the dark can do that I miss judged the distance I thought she was further away than what she was. But with that being said I wont pass on any doe if I get another chance next year.

                  Two mountain lion sightings?

Any local folks hearing similar reports or getting any game cam pics?

Would not have thought there were any mountain lions in Grayson Co.
