My 6 yr Old Smoke Poled his First Deer!

My son finally got to take a gun to the stand this weekend. He had been practicing and was doing great with a borrowed .223 so I thought it was time for him to try to get his first deer.

He carried the gun to the stand and never asked for me to carry it. Once in he was bouncing off of the walls but he knew we were in the stand and had to be quiet.

It wasn't too long after sun up that we had a spike come into some corn that I had put out at 65 yards.

Now to back up a little bit...

The week before I had printed several profiles of deer and made a crosshair on exactly where he should shoot the deer. Well the night before we left I printed the same deer and had him draw the crosshair. He was right on the money.

While we were watching the deer I would ask him if the deer was in a good position to where he could take a shot. He watch the deer very attentively and answered correctly each time. Finally the deer turned broadside and he quickly told me that he was ready.

He was sitting on my lap as he could not reach the window himself. I was more or less a seat as he found the deer in the scope and told me he found the sweet spot. I took the gun off safety and told him when he was ready that he could take him. I let go and was watching down the right side of the gun. It only seemed like a few seconds and he squeezed the trigger.

The deer dropped in its tracks!! I do not think I have ever been that excited in my life!!!

My 6 year old had just smoked his first deer! He had done everything exactly like I asked and was a calm as could be. He may have been excited too but I think my excitement was over shadowing his. I was on the verge of tears!

We waited for about 30 minutes before we went out just to show him that we needed to wait. I showed him exactly how to approach and check the deer.

Once we got up to the deer I found that he had missed his spot. However, he found the Ear Hole of the Deer. Hence his new nickname of "Ear Hole" or "EHP" (Ear Hole Patterson) for short.

We sit for a couple more days and never did see anything else he could take but the entire trip was solidified that first morning.

The best part was out of the 4 boys that went, 6/11/11/11, all of them were able to harvest a deer.

I have to say it was one of the best weekends I have ever had.

Picture is a bit graphic due to the shot. If anyone would offer to clean it up for me I can send the original pic. He would like to print a few copies for the Grandparents and people at School.

That is awesome!!!!!! congrats.. I love the idea of printing off the deer with crosshairs, then having your son draw where to shoot the night before. Great Idea.. I think my little girl will be ready to harvest her first deer next season. She has got a bb gun that she is nails with. will bump her up over the summer for her b-day so she can get a few months in with a bigger caliber...

Conrats to your son and to you too dad for taking the time to educate him and taking him hunting in God's creation. You taught him good hunting ethics and taking a deer correctly.

Send me your picture. I'll be happy to clean it up for you. I'll PM you with my e-mal.
