I just dont see the point may as well use a rifle or a muzzeloader. While your brother may be a healthy, strong man, and can still shoot a compound bow, the crossbow has some advantages over the compound or traditional.
A crossbow may help to get people into the field to hunt who ordinarily would not hunt. The nation has suffered a severe shortage of hunters of all ages, especially the young ones who are so into electronic games and won't get off the couch or out of the house to enjoy the majesty of God's creation and the thrill, the natural high of harvesting an animal for the table. They won't get the opportunity to be mentored by hunters like you, obviously an experienced woodsman. These folks won't be able shoot a compound or traditional bow accurately enough at first because it takes so much time to practice. By getting a person, young or senior into the field with a crossbow and whetting their appetite for hunting and God's creation, they may go on to become hunters with compound or traditional bows as well as rifle, shotgun, or pistol. I am getting older and to a point, arthrities is really taking a toll on my joints. I can no longer shoot a high draw weight compound bow (used to pull 70#) and am forced to shoot a crossbow. I still hunt with all the other tools at my disposal but I also encourage young people and even seniors to begin hunting with archery equipment. The crossbow is a start, a bridge from the civilized and into the primitive from which our country evolved but our spirits yearn to be. God's creation of wood and field is a healing force to which all of us hunters must go periodically to regenerate our souls and spirits.
My 8 year old grandson practices with his little bow (25 pound draw weight) and he's looking forward to shooting paw paw's compound bow. He is deady with my crossbow at 25 yards. He has shot two deer with a rifle and looks forward to dropping the string on a buck or doe with my crossbow. But he's hunting and out of the house and away from the video games. He has another perspective on life. Just the other day, in the stand, I overheard my my 8 year old grandson tell his 4 year old brother how to shoot a deer if he was broadside or quartering away. Teaching the young and inexperienced is the future of hunting.
All of the above is my humble opinion. Thanks for listening. May God bless.
