Is this sign of the rut beginning in the panhandle

Yesterday the secretary at church received a phone call from her husband who works at a ranch in Canadian. Though it was time for lunch I asked if I could accompany her to the ranch and here is what we found.

Stanley, the secretary's husband then went on to rope the buck and hold it down while we attemped to free the deer.

Without the use of a saw we were able to free the deer and watch the younger of the two buck run off and bed down close to water.

Unfortunately the older buck did not make it as he was already dead when they were found. I figured he was probably 3 or 4 and a half and in another year or two could have been a really sweet 8 if he had made it. I got to touch the antlers but it was a sick feeling knowing it ended like this. Hopefully the other buck will be alright as we at least got him loose.

Those are incredible pictures. Pretty awesome, but sad to hear about the other buck.

The coolest mount I have ever seen was of two giant Wisconsin bucks who were tangled up. The bigger of the two had killed the other buck before the hunter saw them. They mounted both of the bucks together still tangled up as one of the bigger bucks tines had been stuck in the other bucks head. It was a SWEET mount of two giant bucks!

Awesome pictures, definitely a once in a life time experience. Special thanks to the guys that freed the buck to live another day. If not both deer would have died.

Nature, baby. That's the way of the world.

That really isnt a sad way for a deer to die IMO. Compare that to when a deer dies of old age. When that happens, his teeth are usually rotted away and he isnt able to eat, and eventually just starves to death. Imagine how awful that would be. There's a lot more suffering for the deer when he dies from old age than from fighting to the death.

Dang, when I posted in here earlier this morning I didn't realize this was a 7 yr old thread!! I did think it was odd that the rut was starting in August though.
