Bible first. I highly recomend "How To Talk So Kids Will Listen &Listen So Kids Will Talk." I couldn't believe how effective this is if you put it into practice. I have no children of my own, but my husband was a single father when we met. His son was 7 and a proper little creep. This REALLY helped. It is like medicine, tho, it won't do any good in the jar. You have to PRACTICE what it teaches, just like you have to practice what the Bible teaches. The authors are Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. Plus every thing that Shane said in his post #15 book.

Bible. Specifically Proverbs which means "wise sayings". The early chapters are written by the father (King Solomon, the wisest man that ever lived) to his sons and are advice on how to live a Godly life. The books mentioned above are good but you've probably got the BEST book already in your house.

Our church brought in an author named Madelyn Swift to speak to us (then) young parents and she was fantastic. Her book is Discipline for Life and it tells you how she goofed as a parent, then re-booted and really figured it out. My boys are now 11 and 13. I am grateful every day for this book. I strongly recommend it to anyone with children from toddlers through teens.
I also recommend scouting as a great activity that you can participate in with your boys.

X2 for what Shane said. I came from a not so perfect situation. But there was one thing we always had and that was "I love you". I'm 33 and I still talk to my old man everyday. We still say I love at the end of every phone call. Maybe that's why I hope to be half the man he is in my lifetime

i can't over-estimate the value that going thru the 18 week program called "the quest for authentic manhood" hosted by robert lewis would be. i would love to have had it before i raised my 3 boys. google it and find where it is being given and learn how to raise children-esp sons. good luck.

It's a great adventure.
