    Any CHL holders out there?

Im lookin into getting mine and wanted to see who everyone took theirs with. Im in Wharton County so if anyone knows anybody within this area that would be great.

Also, what does it cost and what does it cover?

    Thanks

Just received my renewal today. The license allows you to legally carry a firearm on your person. Currently under Texas law, you can legally carry in your car without a CHL, but just be aware that this privelege is extended only to persons that are "traveling". "Traveling" could subjectively be determined to be different by the officer than what you consider it to be, so just be aware that if you don't have your CHL and decide to carry in your car, you could end up with a very inconvenient afternoon.

If this will be your first time taking the course, I very strongly recommend that you look for an instructor with a law enforcement background. To each his own though, and there are plenty of other good instructors out there. If I remember correctly, your class will run $75-100, you can rent a gun and buy ammo and most places, and then the license application fee is $140. Better have your ducks in a row with the application, because they will kick it back otherwise. The license is good for 5 years after issuance and expires on your birthday.

It's a BIG responsibility with MAJOR potential to completely wreck your life financially and career-wise if you ever blast someone, but financial ruin beats a dirt nap any day.

I carry a S&W 442 with Buffalo Bore LSWCHP as my carry gun, and my truck/traveling gun is a Glock 20SF 10mm. I hope and pray that I never have to use them, but I have drawn in defense twice in the 10 years I've had my license. Be careful, go slow, and make **** sure you're prepared to listen and learn before you sign up for the class.

my wife and i have ours...definately worth it...especially now that im a daddy too...hope i never have to use it but surely not afraid to protect my life or my families...i took it from a friend of mine who teaches...you'll find out there are lots of grey areas and areas open for interpretation if you ever have to shoot someone...so like was posted above...you have a major responsibility once you get your CHL!...good luck!

As the law was changed in the Texas Legislation, you do Not have to be traveling, and weapon and ammo do Not have to be separate.

Got mine as back in early 2006 and will be doing my renewal this December while I'm home on leave. I did mine through a Gunsmith in Stephenville, TX while I was goin to school. All law abiding citizens should have one!

I understand your point, but Texas has never differentiated between a loaded and unloaded weapon.
If you had one, as far as Texas was concerned, it was loaded...

Better question would be - "is there anyone on this site that is NOT a CHL holder"!

                            Best money I ever spent.

Some say it does not matter, but when you get pulled over and hand the officer both licenses. They seem a little more at ease. JMO on this part.

But it is worth the money.

Check with Carroll's Gun Shop just south of Wharton on Hwy 59. They can get you in touch with some good people.
