    Considering a new ride...Thoughts

I'm looking at getting a new vehicle and I am reallly interested in a ford excusrion 4 x 4 in either the Limited or Eddie Bauer models. Since they haven't made them since 05, I'm trying to find one that's under 100K mileage wise and in good to excellent conditon. I'f found a few in the DFW area and test drove two so far. Both of these had been lifted. One drove very well, but the vehicle was in average shape inside and out. The other was in great shape appearance wise but needed front ball joints and some engine work (the motor didn't seem to have much get up and go).

So here a few questions for the TBH brother and sisterhood?

    1. Anyone own a Excursion? or have owned one?
    2. If so, anything I need to check on/look out for before I put the coin down?
    3. Any ideas on major maintenance/repair issues on this vehicle?
    4. Anyone have a good lead on one?
    5. Blue book says for what I'm looking for..I should spend between $19 to 26K. Is that a pretty good price range for a 5+ year old vehicle?
    6. Pros & cons on the excursion?

    Thanks...I open to your input.

the 7.3 or the 6.0? I think the last year for the 7.3 was in 02. I have read that the 6.0 is ok if you have the heads studded what ever that means

I wouldn't buy one unless it had the V-10. =)

I'm now listening in to this one, I am also on the lookout for an Excursion, but for me it's gotta be Diesel and more than likely a 7.3L, from what I hear that engine runs great for a very long time, so even if i was to get one with 100k+ miles on it, it would have plenty of life left.

            Jeff,

Look for one with the 7.3L diesel or the V-10. The 5.4L V8 is a DOG in those beasts.

PM me and I can get you in touch with a guy that will probably be able to find you one in above average condition for a fair price. He can also give you the pros and cons of them as well.

preferably 7.3 if you can find one with lower mile for the age of the vehicle. the 6.0 is hit and miss, some people swear by them and some people cuss them. i think i would do some heavy investigation on said vehicle before i bought one with the 6.0, but thats just me.

Had one with the V-10, would not have another unless it was a 7.3

                      Humpy,

The 6.0 was notorious for warped heads and blown head gaskets (among other things). Heads are held on by bolts when assembled at the factory. When folks had problems with the heads/gaskets some folks would pay extra to have studs installed in the block which were stronger and less prone to stretching. I think it usually runs about $1200 for head studs to be installed.

I would seriously try for the 7.3 over the 6.0. But if you go with the 6.0 have it checked out VERY WELL before you do.

Did you call the contact that I sent you?

I have 03 7.3 with 240k miles and same motor. I have replaced front end once and that's about it other than the normal things that go wrong with any vehicle you have. I bought it 2 years old with 40k miles.fwiw
