How to tell the age of a deer?

I am seeing alot of talk about only taking a deer of a certain age. When your in the stand, how can you tell how old the deer is? Looking at a day lease, and it says the buck must be at least 3 1/2 years. And they have some 8's that are only 2 1/2, and you will be fined if you shoot one younger than 3 1/2. Thanks.

Here are a couple of references.

Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine, the Outdoor Magazine of Texas: Editorial Information.

Google your question, you will find a ton of info. There are some good books with illustrations of deer from different parts of the country at different ages too.

Get the big picture to keep in camp and several of the pocket size to carry while hunting. Nothing is fool proof but these are a great help in getting started and get you close to aging oin the hoof.
