I was fortunate enough to get a shot at an awesome main framed 8 point with two kickers Saturday evening in Coryell County. I did not shoot him with my bow, but with a .300 Win Mag. It's alright though because time to time, I still enjoy rifle hunting. This was the first deer that I have shot with a rifle in 7 years. I brought my bow along, but they just aren't going near the feeders there. Piles of corn under them, so I sat in a box blind in my favorite place on the 1100 acres. It's a 45 acre field with a huge, wooded ridge that is a bedding area directly in front @ 60 yards with a creek running parallel with the long, narrow field. I got in the stand at 3:00 and instantly started seeing deer, all doe. At 4:30, I looked out the right side window of the stand and noticed a huge bodied deer at approx 200 yards away, but he was facing away. I jerked my binoculars up and all I could see was long tines. I knew he was a shooter and looked down to grab my grunt call to turn him around, as soon as I looked up, he had vanished. I was so mad. At 6:15, a doe came out off the ridge in front of me and I watched her mill around. She was walking left to right. Suddenly, I heard ALOT of commotion back in the trees where she came from. I focused my attention there and just saw a big set of antlers emerge from the trees at 60 yards. All I knew was that he had a big frame and long tines, nothing else. I grabbed the .300 and had it out the window quick, whistled to stop him, found the shoulder in the scope and squeezed the trigger. All in all, it probably lasted 3 seconds, tops. He whirled around and made a lunge about 5' and crashed. I could see his left side sticking up over the tall grass, so I knew he was a good one. My Dad was hunting about 400 yards from me and heard me shoot. He texted me "I'm comin over". He knew I wouldn't shoot just ANY deer with a gun, it had to be a good one. I fought the temptation to go check him out and met with my Dad. Together, we walked over to him and the celebration began when we saw him and continued into the night with Ribeyes, baked potatoes and salad with lots of adult beverages!
