    Hunters Ed. Course

My wife and daughter are both wanting to get into bow hunting(There goes my pay checks!!). I have been looking online and am just finding stuff for guns. Does anyone out there know if they have to take that one or is there a class for just bowhunting? Also it mentions a field course where they have to fire the gun. Does this apply with bows as well? I took a safety course years and years ago in H/S in my taxidermy class so have no idea whats out there now.

    Thanks

Just the regular hunter safety is mandatory.Firing a gun is part of it.

I believe if you take the online hunter ed class you have to fire guns. Piece of cake though. And if they were born after 1971 they are required to take hunter ed. The first year you can get a one time deferrment but you have to take it the next year if you want to hunt.

After taking the TX hunter safety course, I'd recommend they take the IBEP Bowhunter Education course. Most state hunter saefety courses just touch archery and bowhunting to get through all the material.

IBEF not required to hunt in TX (it is in 14 states today, mostly in the midwest and northeast), and while they may not ever need the card, the knowledge gained is worth the time. I'd suggest you make it a family affair and go as well.

I had to re-take my hunter ed course since I needed the card to elk hunt CO and did not have one from ancient times, and took the IBEP course from a friend in the archery club who gave it, and needed another sign-up which I was happy to do. Re-taking the hunter ed course, knowing how to hunt, and listening to the questions from all the 'newbies' was very interesting, and I wound up helping the instructor setup, etc.

Glad to hear your wife and daughter want to get involved in bowhunting.

As Bill said, the IBEP course teaches the ethics, responsibilities and safety of bowhunting. Students learn shot placement, equipment, first aide, tree stand safety, judging distances, blood trail, etc. It is a great course for all bowhunters, but especially beginning bowhunters. There is a live fire for bows.

There is one coming up in the Houston area:

          Pearland September 21, 2007 6:00 p.m. (281) 652-1673

Doublej (Jack Jetton) will be holding classes at the beginning of next year in Pearland and BPS, Katy.
