Wife had to work Canton this weekend so the kids went to the deer lease with my mom and dad.
Daughter went out Sat morning and did not last an hour, 30deg ended her hunt quick, so back to camp for dad to pick up her older brother. They sat and did not see anything. Daughter made it back out that afternoon and saw an owl fly up in a tree close to the stand but nothing else.
This morning my son was up again. We were on this lease last year but money is tight so we decided to hunt behind the house rather than 2hrs away. After deer season last year there was alot of activity in the area, gas wells being drilled, seismic lines being shot, and biggest of all a pipe line being run through the lease. Dad has been watching the pipeline ROW and seeing lots of deer crossing so they went to sit on it this morning. Low and behold the biggest buck that dad has seen on the lease steps out at around 165yds. Tanner told me that you could tell he was a good one without binoculars or looking through the scope. He calmly (according to dad) put the crosshairs on the buck and squeezed off a shot which hit way short, said the deer turned 180 and took a few steps. He reloaded his H&R .243 and dad told him to lay the crosshairs across his back. 2nd shot kicked dirt on the buck and he headed off. Tanner is sick about having missed a good buck, guess we are gonna hit the shooting range and practice some longer shots. He has drilled a couple of does ~100yds with no problem
I guess the only good thing is it was a clean miss and he will live longer.
