    All I want is a Turkey! Double video setup...}

The last couple years I have decided a wanted a turkey with my bow. I had never had a chance to take a shot at a legal turkey before so I now had them on my hit list. Ryan took me "turkey" hunting last yr only for me to kill 2 does and a cull buck per his request! This last weekend found me back at Ryans for a second time this season, to finally get a shot at my turkey I had been wanting.

We were sitting in the house blind that Ryan put up this year and had two video cameras and two bows and a lot of bull! We were just talking about how all we ever see on the property is hens when all of the sudden three bearded birds made their appearance. I assume they are young males, please excuse my ignorance, but the heads did not look like gobblers to me and the lack of strut or puff make them look like just another hen. I doubt three bearded hens would just come in so agan I assume they are young gobblers. They had a slight red tent but not all the other stuff I was thinking was on the head of a gobbler. Feel free to educate me on turkeys....I did see a beard and fired a shot.

After about killing myself falling half way down the ladder, I never found the bird that Ryan laughed saying was already dead!

Later that evening I shot at a bearded hen in a large group and knew that show was low and back a little. Watching that bird fly away a mile and never finding it either caused me to have a terrible weekend. I looked for the first bird for literally hours and the second for a good while. The first bird made away with my arrow and laser nock. I walked through the pitch dark and it never showed up as well all around the aread. Tough birds and not perfect hits killed me. Them jokers wont hold still!

    Here is the video.

I am still disgusted over these birds and feel like I lost a PY buck. I want to get a gobbler mounted in a stretched out flying position like my buddy does here locally.

I know, I know....some of you want to tell me if I had been practicing this yr I could have made the shots.

I actually have been shooting and hitting dead on. I wanted to blame the netting that I swore I would never shoot through again...but wont.

Both hits were just too low and back. Guess I need a head on shot or either a direct hit hire and tighter to the the front.

I feel your pain J.T. I've yet to seal the deal on a gobbler with my bow. Hopefully we'll both score this season. Thanks for sharing the video.

JT, I like the broadside shot you took and don't really like the head on. Some say the best shot is in the back with them facing away, I've never tried it. I guess I have been lucky, I shot my first gobbler where the wing joins the body and he dropped and never moved. Last year I aimed where the legs meet the body. He made it about 20 yards and died. That arrow went right thru the boiler room with the biggest mess of feathers stuck to the blood that covered the arrow. Oh, and I shot them both thru netting with expandables! They are tough critters and as you found out they don't leave a dang blood trail. I shot one several years ago with a 22-250 and like to have never found him. I watched another buddy shoot one with a .223. That turkey rolled end over end and flopped and we just knew he was dead. THen he jumped up and ran off and we looked for hours and never found him. Stay after them and you will get one!

I have a couple of turkey birds with my bow, however this past weekend I hit just a little low. Now there is one tom with only 1.5 legs..

Well you've got me beat. I've never even gotten a chance at a turkey with my bow.

I would love to take one though.

            Better luck next time.

Great video. Turkey are tough to kill, everyone will lose one from time to time. I personally like to shoot them with a big mechanical, but that is by no means the only way. Stick with it and you will put one down.

Plenty of them left to shoot! They are hard to kill, maybe next time you should try that "low percentage" head on shot.

Tough luck on the turkeys. From what I could tell, both shots seemed to be low and back? I much prefer the head-on shot, but broadside works well too if you get it in the right spot. Problem is - the right spot is a mighty small spot! Better luck next time. Cool video.

You are fleet of foot Howard! Nice work on the video. The biggest problem I have with hitting turkeys is picking a spot. I've killed three gobblers with a bow, and not one of them have died outright. They are tough.

If you would have been practicing all year you could have made those shots!

Seriously, I hope you knock one down soon.

sure you weren't think "mmmm.. drumbstick" right before you released?

Ryan hates turkeys, he'll give the mechanic a hit list again soon.
                          good luck JT.
