If you SWERVE to miss a deer... here is what happens...

My son (who has had his license for 3 weeks) calls me at my younger sons soccer game yesterday morning( I see that it is him calling and thinking... he should be at football practice). He says he ran into a tree.

WTH i am thinking. He said he swerved to miss a deer on his way to football practice. Boy... was I livid... I have told him over and over ... NEVER...NEVER swerve to miss a deer.

He crossed over the center line to miss the deer. arrrgghh

Dang... it is frustrating. The turn signal light is gone, the drivers side mirror is sheered off. Dents in the grill, hood, fender, windshield support pillar, top of door and the roof above sup cab door as well as a big dent above the fender well where he tucked the truck into the cedar tree.

Folks... be careful, deer are crossing the roads everywhere.

If he had hit the deer, insurance would have covered it(comp)...

          Tit for tat.
          May hive saved his life!
Just thank God and file a claim.
More deer kill people every year in the U.S. in collisions than all predator victims combined! That's why we need to fill every tag, every year!

Do you not have collision coverage too? Insurance would cover that, wouldn't it?

Sucks, and it's scary too. My daughter is still doing driver's ed. I wish there was some way to give a kid 20 years of driving experience by pushing a button or something.

He's safe and sound. Consider it a "teachable moment".

First human instient is to avoid, whatever the case may be. Don't be too hard on the young man. Think what you may have done at his age. The real issue is he is safe and alive.

I agree, sometimes your instincts take over. Just be glad he is ok. Vehicles can be replaced your sons life can't.

No collision coverage... it is a 99 model with 75K miles. paid for...

Frustrating as all get out. I don't think he realizes how lucky he was...

                    1) not to hit another vehicle while crossing over
                    2) not flipping over or being impaled by the cedar tree he tucked into.

You should have enough insurance to cover anything a "new" driver could do to that truck...

Yep. God was looking out for him for sure. I guess the repairs, as bad as they'll be, won't be any worse than full coverage on the truck with him as a driver - maybe cheaper.

naah... gotta disagree with you on that. "HE" has to be able to cover what ever he does to the truck. Collision cost are way more than I can cover for a new driver... especially for an older truck.

                            glad your son is ok,

just fix the light and mirror and drive it, wouldnt worry about small dents here and there as there could be more dents and dings from young drivers

that is what I figured on doing. the mirror(electric) may be costly though. I think the headlight is o.k. Not sure though.

I told him he was gonna drive it till the wheels fell off.
