    Rattlesnakes in the Hill Country

Are their any rattlesnakes out towards the Leakey/Concan area? I used to hunt out that way years ago and never ran into any.

There aren't as many as there are in Fowlerton, Charlotte, Tilden, Freer, etc. but just as soon as you think there aren't any and let your guard down they will remind you that all of Texas is their "home" range...Rattlesnakes are just a fact of life in Texas.

Judy just ran into one yesterday on Whodathunkit which is near Rocksprings. She has seen several this year. I killed several on our place near CampWood, but they wee the rock rattlers, not diamond backs.

Still bite the **** outta ya......we ended up with one in the camphouse Thanksgiving '05. It was so freakin hot then we left the door open to the camphouse and came in after the afternoon hunt. Imagine 7 guys running like babies.

I live in Wimberley...Hays County and have never seen a poisonous snake. My guard was down as I was walking in tennis shoes and shorts to a feeder and Will (texastime travaler) spotted one coiled up in the open. Of the 4 years I've hunted this property high and low I've never seen one. There he was, just popped up one day. It's real scarry when I think back to all the hogs I stalked in waist high Johnson grass with shorts and sneakers on. Keep you eye peeled and get ya some snake boots.

Like my American Express Card - I don't leave home without 'em

South Texas is worse, but the Hill Country is a close second.

The area I hunt near Llano just looks "snaky"

                      No snakes

I hunt at Reagan Wells, just NW of Concan and we have only seen one in 4 years. I was told that if you have hogs and we have plenty, it keeps the snakes down. I still keep my eyes peeled.

I live on the Burnet/Llano County line and in 3 years at my house I have killed a dozen rattlebugs with largest being 6 ft coiled up on the side of the house. My wife stepped on a baby a couple of winters ago wearing flip flops. I have only killed on this year. We have a couple of barn cats that have taken residence I think they have damage the snake population.

A friend of ours has a ranch in Llano County on the Big Sandy off Hwy 71 where the picnic area is. We have killed hundreds off that ranch. He has three big dens and you can sneak up on the dens and they will be sunning themselves. Not uncommon to 20-30 snakes at one time.

                          Dangit Brandon,

Steve told me he killed the very last snake in this end of the world and that I didn't ever need to worry again.

I think he just likes to see how high I can jump.
