I managed to leave work early and go sit in a tree this evening. This is my first hunt in east TX this year. I am hunting in Sabine Co. north of Milam. I got in the stand at about 5:10pm. On my second light rattling sequence, I had a buck (small 6 or 8) come out of a pine plantation and get within 50 yds before turning around and heading back in. I was sitting in a hardwood bottom. That was at 5:50pm. That was all I saw, but I pulled a trail camera card on my way out closer to my other stand. It had 2 pictures taken this evening that was set up on a scrape. The first one was a doe at 5:23 and the second was a nice 8 point taken at 5:24.
I am not going to sit here and scream that the rut has started but I am seeing a lot of scrapes that have popped up since the full moon and a buck right behind a doe is a good sign that things are starting to happen.
Another cool thing is that I found one of this bucks sheds last week about 100yds from this spot. The shed looks to be almost identical to what he was last year.
