Hey all -
I was coming home from Killeen earlier, and turned onto FM 1715 only to find something very upsetting! Someone had hit a yearling doe and never stopped or thought twice. The poor girl was in the middle of the road trying to get up and she couldn't. Her whole rear end was completely useless to her.
After calling the game warden, I walked over, put my sweatshirt on her head to calm her down a bit and I picked her up and carried her to the side of the road and in the grass. Yes, I carried her...that is how tiny she was! It made me sick to my stomach that someone would hit an animal and not even think twice! The game warden came out and after I left, put her out of her misery. Poor girl. In the picture of her up close, you can still see the faint spots along her spine.
I guess the whole point to this story is, if you hit a deer with your vehicle, please stop and make sure the animal is dead. Don't leave them there to suffer. And if it isn't dead, call the game wardens like I did...shoot, I have the phone number for Lampasas if you need it.
And yes, I obviously am a hunter, but stuff like this makes me sick! Just because we hunt them, doesn't mean we let them suffer, either from a bad shot or from hitting them with our vehicles.
Thanks for letting me vent...I know it wasn't yall, but it's something to think about when you are driving during the impending rut...which I think is here out in Lampasas...there are bucks everywhere alive, running does and also along the roadside dead.
