Please read this...it needs to be known

    Hey all -

I was coming home from Killeen earlier, and turned onto FM 1715 only to find something very upsetting! Someone had hit a yearling doe and never stopped or thought twice. The poor girl was in the middle of the road trying to get up and she couldn't. Her whole rear end was completely useless to her. After calling the game warden, I walked over, put my sweatshirt on her head to calm her down a bit and I picked her up and carried her to the side of the road and in the grass. Yes, I carried her...that is how tiny she was! It made me sick to my stomach that someone would hit an animal and not even think twice! The game warden came out and after I left, put her out of her misery. Poor girl. In the picture of her up close, you can still see the faint spots along her spine.
I guess the whole point to this story is, if you hit a deer with your vehicle, please stop and make sure the animal is dead. Don't leave them there to suffer. And if it isn't dead, call the game wardens like I did...shoot, I have the phone number for Lampasas if you need it.
And yes, I obviously am a hunter, but stuff like this makes me sick! Just because we hunt them, doesn't mean we let them suffer, either from a bad shot or from hitting them with our vehicles.
Thanks for letting me vent...I know it wasn't yall, but it's something to think about when you are driving during the impending rut...which I think is here out in Lampasas...there are bucks everywhere alive, running does and also along the roadside dead.

you did well. This is what a lot of folks don't understand about hunters and that is the compassion/respect we hold for the animals we chase. We never want to see one suffer.

I know it's hard but think the best of people. Maybe they didn't realize they had clipped her, didn't know what to do . . . .

not making excuses for them, you did the right thing and that is all that matters!

So I would be breaking the law by putting the deer down with my pistol right? Just want to get that out. Call the Game Warden or DPS?

As far as I know, yes, it would be breaking the law, especially since this was close to houses.
As for who to call, you call the sheriff's office for the town that you are in and they will dispatch a game warden to your location.

dang, there is so much lack of respect these days. Kind of like the thread about those teenagers breaking into houses. Good job for helping her out. I think in the LR everyone will be finely rewarded for the good deeds they have done

In East Texas you will never see one like that, at least for very long. Somebody will have it packed up lickedy split.

I knew the answer to that but I would probably put a baby, crying deer down if I was not near anyone. Sorry you had to handle this but good job getting her out of the road.
