I will take a look at everything again in the morning when I get back from hunting. Maybe i am missing something simple. At least i know what a relay does and how it works.

    Thanks.

turn on the toggle. Put one test lead to ground. Touch the other to the terminal that feeds the blue wire going to the feeder. Do you have 12v ?
If so - then I would check to make sure that the wire going to the "other" wire on the motor is grounded. Blue wire provides 12v to the motor. The other wire coming out of the motor has to be grounded.

Sorry Robert, I am in for the night. Trying to get the six month old to go to bed so I can go to bed. I will check what you just mentioned tomorrow.

        Thanks again,

        Alan

I used to purchase these while working for a company that manufactured off road construction equipment. They are cheep......made in Mexico junk and It is not uncommon for the relay to fail.

FWIW.........here is NAPA's offering on that part.

I know that if you go to a Car Quest Auto supply, the part # is an RY-115 or RY-116. One of them will have a little mounting tab and the other does not. Both are the same internally. They are rated at around 40 amps max if I remember correctly. I replace them all the time in our Promatic clay target traps.

Sounds to me like the motor isn't grounded properly.....

Rsdodge covered it well, but here's the easiest way to tell if it's working.

Put one hand on the toggle.
Hold the relay in two fingers of the other hand.
                    Flip the switch.
If is shocks the **** outta you ... naaaa, just kiddin'. If you feel it "click" it's working. If it doesn't "click", it could be hung, but being that new, it's not likely.

I think Dale nailed this one ... possibly a bad ground on the feeder. Check that after you check to see if the relay "clicks".

Thanks for the help guys. I checked all the wireing all the way from the feeder to the battery on the truck and made sure everything had good connections. Couldn't find any problems. Came to the conclusion the the relay was bad(at least part of it). Went to Oreilly's to buy one at lunch and they wanted $13. I said forget it and went to Wal-Mart and got another toggle switch($2). I will just make a different switch for the feeder, put an inline fuse in it and be done with it. Then I will know it will work. That is the plan anyway. ;-)

More than likely the switch will work ... for a while.

Toggle switches aren't designed to handle much amperage, thus the relay. Simply put, the switch opens/closes the relay. The relay gets power directly from the battery and can handle much more amperage than the switch that turns it on/off.

Did you test it to see if it "clicks"?

Kevin do you think the road feeder pulls more that 30 amps?

                          Do all relays click?

X2 / This relay is mainly used for sound and security systems. When you go to the part store just look/ask for 12 VDC Automotive Relay SPDT 30/40A

Doubt it would pull more than 30amps, if it did it would be at start up for just a moment till the motor started spinning... Yes relays click, thats the contacts closing...

Did you get a 30 amp toggle switch?
If so, I think you'll be fine. If your feeder, even at startup, draws 30 amps, I wouldn't want to be within 100 yards of that slinger! That thing could break skin with a kernel of corn!

Like Bud mentioned, all relays click.
Sometimes you can hear it, but you can always feel it, if you hold it in your hand.
