    Deer in hog trap

Has anybody out there that traps hogs had a problem with this? If so what did you do to prevent deer from getting in the trap and harming themselves? Caught this doe in a trap a couple of days ago. She looked fine when I let her out, but not sure if she over exerted and ran off into the brush and died. Definitely don't want to catch anymore deer and take the chance of getting a big buck in a trap.

diesel corn didn't keep the deer out in East Texas, but what did work is to hang burlap over the door with the bottom about 9" off the ground. Hogs will eat corn and push right past the loose burlap, but deer don't want to go thru something they can't see thru. Ever seen the "chutes" and corrals at a deer handling facility?

Had a small axis buck caught in a trap last year. Was not fun trying to get him out. I would use diesel corn or cut the top off so they can jump out.

Happened once when I was a kid (16-17) hunting on my Dad's lease. Ilet a spike out of a hog trap and got chewed out for it by one of the other guys on the lease. Evidently he wasn't in it for the sport so much. My Dad and his friends took my side and told him to lay off......

I still see that guy to this day an wonder why he would want to shoot a deer in a cage.

But that was his last year on our lease.

As for keeping them out??? I have no idea.

                Good luck.

We had it happen with a 12 point. By the time we found him and sedated him he had already broke his jaw. We don't even know how he got his head in there.

We quit using guilitine type door traps for this very reason even with diesel it was a problem. We switched to the spring loaded doors and have not had a problem.

A ol-timer taught me this one... put field fence over the gate area and raise it slightly off the ground to imitate a hole in the fence. Keep the trap door locked open for several weeks to get the hogs coming in. Then set it correctly when your ready to make the catch. I added a game-cam to show what was going in and out the trap to ensure deer were not stealing my bait. I have not caught any deer. Good luck.

                          Bob G.

RingSteel is dead on with the burlap bag over the door opening. Since an old timer told me to do that I have not caught anymore deer in my hog traps. Diesel soaked corn does not keep the deer from eating the corn.
