    scope magnification

looking at a 6x18x40 buckmaster because i like how clear it is under heavy mag, this will be for my varmint gun, currently have a 3x9 on, I own a 4.5 x 12 x50 in buckmaster and have been happy with it....quesiton is with 6 being the lowest power how hard is it to find a target at close range? 100 and under? mainly will use this gun for longer shooting but with the lowest setting at 6 I got to wondering about it. Please let me know your input and if anyone has this scope your thoughts on it

i mean if its in an open field you might have a bit of a problem. i shot my buddy with same scope, but shot it in a 3 blade wide sendero and i found my hog preety easy at 74 yards

I have an 8x-32x Nightforce on a varmint rifle. I use the 8x when it gets late and I need more light gathering ability. I have not had any problems using it at 50-100yds on 8x. Not saying it's the best for those close ranges but it's pretty easy to find the target on that setting.

I personally don't like high magnification scopes. Anything over 10x is a waist once the temp gets up, not to mention dealing with an adjustable objective. My varmint rifles all have 3-9 scopes. My Pdog gun has a 4.5-16 and I rarely get over 12x with it because the heat waves are so bad.

Even my long range 308 has a 3-9x mildot. A good 2-10 with fine cross hairs is the most I really need.

Heat waves are the mirage that will look like water flowing at long range and with high magification. It is that same as the heat waves that you see when you are driving on a black top road. Look at this from you tube towards the bottom left of the flag and you can see the mirage. Mirage, that is what i should have said. I have shot pdogs with snow on the ground and still seen mirage at longer ranges. I'll take a fine crosshair on 8x over anything above 12x any day. I don't like messing with adjustable objectives either.

My leupold 6-18Xs have adjustible objective that allows me to focus at shorter range even with 6 power. Can change it to 50 yards on the scope and focus the closer ranges.
